On Tuesday, DE-CIX New York reached a new peak traffic record of 844 Gigabits per second. The traffic has been going up steadily for the past couple of weeks, finally breaking the 800 Gbps barrier. We can never say for sure what exactly caused the peak, but the Apple live show might have had something to do with it.
Connecting over 250 networks
DE-CIX New York is the 5th largest Internet Exchange in the US, and the number one in the Northeast. With more access points than any other Internet Exchange in North America, it is Open-IX certified, and carrier and data center neutral. At the moment we connect over 250 networks at DE-CIX New York.
Not just in New York
Normally, the annual peak Internet traffic season is in winter, when people tend to spend more time indoors. This year, with the Covid-19 measures, the season has started earlier than usual and New York is not the only location where we have had traffic peaks lately. In the past couple of weeks, DE-CIX Madrid reached 555 Gbps, Istanbul 197 Gbps, Dallas 195 Gbps, Marseille 128 Gbps, and Munich 94 Gbps. The big one was of course Frankfurt two weeks ago, when we reached 10 Terabits per second for the first time. That record has already been broken – a week ago we crossed 10.3 Tbps.
There was cake
In normal times, these milestones are celebrated with a big cake in the office. And we did have cake to celebrate hitting the 10 Tbps in Frankfurt, but as most of us are working from home, the cake was donated to the Frankfurter Tafel (a local food bank). We hope it was enjoyed!
