Today, 14 August, DE-CIX Marseille reached a new all-time traffic peak of 104 Gigabits per second. This was the first time we crossed the 100Gbps threshold at the Exchange. Due to overall traffic developments in the last few months, we have been expecting this – but it is always a proud moment to set a new record.
Network upgrade in 2019
All DE-CIX Internet Exchanges are able to handle the existing and expected traffic growth without any problems. Capacities in our own network are regularly expanded on a long-term basis and we continue expanding as soon as 63% of the existing capacities are reached. Last year, we upgraded the network in Marseille, and the number of connected networks grew by over 33% in 2019. We now have almost hundred networks connected with customer bandwidth increased by over 28% in the past year.
International mix of networks
Marseille is one of the key European landing stations for a large number of international subsea cables, and a critical gateway for the communications infrastructure that transports African and Middle Eastern traffic to Europe. Due to the intercontinental cables landing in the region, we have a really interesting international mix of networks connected in Marseille: just over a third of the networks originate from Europe, slightly less from the US and then 12%, 10%, and 7% respectively are from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
