AT&T 5G Launches in 28 New Markets, Including the First with Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) Technology
Consumers in new 5G markets among the first to experience the value of AT&T’s dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology in launch of 5G, building on the nation’s best and also fastest wireless network.1
AT&T’s* 5G network is now live for consumers in 28 additional markets across the country and covers 179 million people. With today’s launch, AT&T now offers access to 5G on its best unlimited wireless plans for consumers and businesses in a total of 355 markets in the U.S.2
In parts of some markets, AT&T has enabled dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology which allows carriers to share the same channel between both 4G and 5G users simultaneously, based on demand, creating a seamless experience for customers. Through DSS, AT&T can deploy 5G faster and more efficiently to help more customers take advantage of 5G technology, sooner. This technology helps create an intelligent and robust network for customers.
“DSS is an important steppingstone on our path to nationwide 5G,” said Igal Elbaz, SVP of wireless and access technology. “We were the first U.S. carrier to deploy this technology in our network, and it’s now playing an important role as we work toward a nationwide 5G footprint this summer.”

March 16, 2020
5G is the future of wireless technology and is poised to jumpstart the next wave of unforeseen mobile innovation. As the first to introduce the U.S. to mobile 5G, we’ve seen its power and are excited to continue to unlock new experiences for more customers.
This week, we’re introducing our 5G network to 20 more markets. With this latest news, we now provide access to 5G1 on our best unlimited wireless plans for consumers and businesses in a total of 100 markets across the U.S. And 5G+ is now available in parts of 35 cities for customers with compatible plans and devices.
Two flavors of next generation 5G technology
We’re building our more widely available 5G network on the Nation’s Best Wireless Network using low-band spectrum. This service now covers more than 80 million people. This service offers impressive speeds over broader distances than 5G+ and is ideal for mobile customers who need performance while on the go.
We offer an enhanced wireless experience on 5G+ with our millimeter wave service though with more limited coverage. Results continue to be impressive – we have seen a peak download speed of over 2 Gbps — where customers at select businesses, universities, hospitals and sports venues are beginning to see the early benefits.
Check back often to stay updated on where we’re introducing 5G next. For more information on AT&T 5G availability, check out att.com/5Gforyou.
