98% of DDoS Attacks are Less than 10Gbps, Confirms Corero

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.March 5, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Corero Network Security (LSE: CNS) – the leader in real-time, high-performance, automatic DDoS attack detection and mitigation, has published their Full Year 2019 DDoS Trends Report today.

Our increasingly Internet-connected world grows more complex every year, due to faster connections, the widespread adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and the explosion of cloud services. Simultaneously, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) threats have become more sophisticated, more frequent, and larger. Internet resilience can come down to a fraction of a second and when connectivity goes down, organizations that rely on the Internet go down with it. DDoS attacks are considered one of the most serious threats to business continuity. Downtime, or increased latency, can significantly impact brand reputation, customer trust and revenue. Plus, within Europe, the introduction of the GDPR and NIS legislation has significantly increased the risk of punitive fines.

In the past year, the continuing trend is that the average volume of attacks is increasing. In January of 2019 there was a report of a DDoS SYN attack which resulted in an overwhelming deluge of 500 million packets per second.  Having said that, lower-volume, short attacks continue to dominate, with 98% occurring at less than 10Gbps and 85% lasting less than 10 minutes.

Other report highlights are:

  • The use of multi-vector attacks increased 13% year-over-year
  • Organizations have a 25% chance of being re-attacked within 24 hours, rising to 36% within 90 days
  • Corero observed that over 99% of attacks do not reach 95% link saturation levels

Ashley Stephenson, Corero CEO, concludes, “Proactive DDoS protection is a critical element of any cyber security defense against loss of service availability. The majority of DDoS attacks that Corero has highlighted in this report cannot be adequately defeated with traditional Internet gateway security solutions such as firewalls, Intrusion Prevention Systems and the like. Similarly, on-demand cloud-based DDoS scrubbing alternatives cannot react fast enough to mitigate the short-duration attacks that are now impacting businesses every day. As organizations develop their resiliency plans, and choose their methods of DDoS protection, the time-to-mitigation exposure must be a critical evaluation factor. Combining on-premises detection and mitigation as a part of a cloud hybrid DDoS protection solution can close this gap.”
