Steelville Accelerates Network Transformation and Subscriber Turn Up Times by 75 Percent with Calix Professional Services

Regional service provider upgrades network with AXOS, delivering next-generation services on everyPON in record time

SAN JOSE, CA – February 6, 2020 – Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX, news, filings) today announced that Steelville Telephone Exchange (STE) has partnered with the Calix Professional Servicesteam to accelerate an extensive upgrade to a GPON and Active Ethernet-ready network built on AXOS®. The combined effort resulted in STE completing the upgrade well ahead of schedule—and under budget—freeing the STE operations team to focus on driving the availability of advanced services for subscribers. The regional communications service provider (CSP) selected the AXOS E7-2 Intelligent Modular System over competing solutions because it simplified the network and enabled them to serve subscribers using Active Ethernet, a familiar technology. This also allowed Steelville to leverage the everyPON™ capability of AXOS to seamlessly migrate to higher bandwidth PON technologies like 10G-PON as they executed their expansion strategy into adjacent service areas.

This network transformation required the migration of subscribers to the new network within a compressed timeframe. The Calix Professional Services team customized tools to STE’s environment in order to automate and accelerate this migration that allowed STE to free up its operations team and eliminate the risk of potential errors due to traditional manual approaches.   Not only did Calix offer the end-to-end network solutions that made sense for STE, but the Professional Services team was able to guide them through implementation and subscriber turn up in just a little over three months—a process that typically takes more than a year.

“If you factor in our timeline and our need to get to market quickly, this network transformation was the impossible made possible, and it’s a testament to the Calix team working on this project,” said Kevin Ancell, general manager for Steelville Telephone Exchange. “This entire project, from inception to turn up, has been the best experience of my career. I am from Missouri, the ‘Show-Me’ state, and Calix did show me how we could get the job done. We couldn’t be more pleased—from sales to sales engineering to product availability and shipping as well as the installation and Calix project management. It was a phenomenal effort.”

Missouri-based Steelville Telephone Exchange, Inc. delivers the latest communications technology, enabling its subscriber to fulfill their personal goals. Recognizing that the Internet is essential to the communities it serves, STE enables the success of businesses, provides virtual learning opportunities for rural students, and delivers lifesaving access to medical care through telehealth and distance medicine. All of this connectivity comes at the speed of light over this new high speed, ultra-low latency fiber network the regional provider has built with Calix.

The Calix Professional Services team aided this mission by speeding time to market while introducing several operational and cost efficiencies that freed the STE team to maintain its focus on subscribers. Steelville has also recognized the tremendous value of elevating its subscriber experience and plans to deploy new managed Wi-Fi services with Calix Support Cloud and the GigaSpire®, powered by EXOS™. This combination of the upgraded, software defined network with a differentiated subscriber experience positions Steelville as the provider of choice in its markets.

“Calix Professional Services is thrilled to partner with the Steelville Telephone Exchange and play a critical role in making this aggressive network transformation a reality,” said Matt Collins, chief marketing officer for Calix. “The power of our services organization is our ability to help CSPs every step of the way as they transform not only their networks but also their businesses. Calix Professional Services combined with our industry leading access platforms, cloud and premises systems are unmatched at helping CSPs achieve their goals, delight their subscribers, and stay ahead of competitors.”
