Altibox Carrier and Xtera announced today that they had started construction of a new repeater-based cable system between Norway and UK. Xtera is a provider of novel subsea fibre optic solutions. With a capacity of up to 216 Terabits per second, the system will significantly increase data capacity between Norway and the rest of the world. In addition to dark fibre sales, the eight fibre pair cable across the North Sea will be a part of a larger European fibre network established by Altibox Carrier, Euroconnect-1, that will ensure robust and state-of-the-art digital infrastructure.
“The contract is now in force, and the system will be ready for service by the end of Q4 2021”, said Chief Technology Officer of Altibox Carrier, Atle Soma, adding “The new subsea cable has already attracted substantial interest from international clients”.
Keith Henderson, CEO of Xtera, said: “We are proud that the NO-UK consortium has selected our proven technology and collaborative project management approach for this full turnkey system. We will be working closely with all stakeholders, including the permitting authorities, to deliver this critical infrastructure project on time and on budget”.
