TECH LONDON ADVOCATES AND INTERXION LAUNCH NEW 5G WORKING GROUP TO SUPPORT NEXT-GEN CONNECTIVITY FOR UK TECH COMPANIES

19/11 – Today, Tech London Advocates (TLA) and Interxion launch a dedicated Working Group of investors, leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers and mobile operators to address challenges of and campaigning for the opportunities of 5G technology in Britain.

This community of ecosystem stakeholders is independent of government and led by the private sector to help in delivering the potential of full 5G roll-out to consumers, businesses and wider society. 5G technology promises radically faster download speeds, increased network reliability and will enable advanced technologies including Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IOT) and driverless cars.

Earlier this year, research conducted by Barclays demonstrated that by 2025, superfast 5G networks could add £15.7 billion to the UK economy. Yet, there are critical hurdles to be addressed before 5G is available across Britain – notably extensive infrastructure investment, a clear, funded national strategy and increased knowledge amongst enterprises of 5G’s merits.  Pre-election announcements from all major UK political parties promising ubiquitous broadband have brought additional focus on 5G and the UK’s digital strategy.

The TLA 5G Working Group, hosted by data centre experts, Interxion, will be launched at City Hall on Thursday 28th November 2019 and is open to TLA members. The inaugural members will convene to set the agenda for this not-for-profit community and hear from a number of industry leaders to understand the current state of 5G technology in the UK. The event will aim to address the disconnect between Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) claiming 5G networks are already accessible in major UK cities and the realities of transforming connectivity for mass economic benefit throughout Britain.

The TLA and Interxion 5G Working Group will be steered by a voluntary board of senior industry figures, including Russ Shaw, founder of Tech London Advocates and Global Tech Advocates, Kurtis Lindqvist, CEO of London Internet Exchange (LINX), Andrew Fray, Managing Director of Interxion, Mark Gilmour, VP of Colt, Nicolas Bombourg, Managing Director of Budde, and chaired by Caroline Puygrenier, Director of Strategy and Business Development at Interxion.

Russ Shaw, Founder of Tech London Advocates and Global Tech Advocates comments:

“The tech titans of the US and China have unquestionably stolen a march on the UK and are hurtling forwards with the roll-out of 5G for both consumers and businesses. For Britain’s thriving tech community to remain internationally competitive and at the forefront of global advancements, it is imperative that everyone can utilise the latest in digital infrastructure. The UK is leading in a number of verticals including, artificial intelligence, smart cities and fintech – sectors demanding a 5G ecosystem that accelerates growth and doesn’t hinder it. This new collective of advocates will lay a stake in the ground for UK tech and campaign to unlock 5G in the UK.”

Caroline Puygrenier, Director of Strategy and Business Development at Interxion comments:

“5G technology has been hailed as an enabler for the 4th Industrial Revolution, supporting the digitalisation of enterprises. However, the main emerging use case so far has been consumer-related, as we download and consume content at much faster speeds than with 4G. The timing is right to form a business community focussed on 5G, and we’re thrilled to be working alongside TLA on this initiative, to demonstrate that the technology has huge potential for almost every sector – from transport, logistics and manufacturing, to financial services, digital media and healthcare. Together, Interxion and TLA have the expertise, the technical infrastructure and membership network to support businesses across Britain to unlock crucial opportunities from 5G.”
