Ericsson has played a key role in the first standalone end-to-end 5G data session in North America carried out by T-Mobile along with several industry partners. This over-the-air 5G data transmission session was the first in the world to be made on a multi-vendor 5G radio access and core network.
In a press release, T-Mobile has announced that it has completed the successful data session in its Bellevue, Washington lab with the help of industry leaders, including Ericsson.
For this over-the-air standalone 5G data session, T-Mobile used AIR 6488 radio and Baseband 6630 from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio. These Ericsson Radio Access Network (RAN) products need only a software upgrade to enable standalone mode.
Current 5G networks are non-standalone (NSA), meaning devices connect to 5G and LTE simultaneously, delivering better mobile broadband speeds and performance than with LTE alone.
Considered the ultimate 5G technology, Standalone New Radio (SA NR) – coupled with cloud-native 5G Core – will provide better support for all use cases and unlock the power of next-generation mobile technology. It will supercharge applications that require real-time responses and massive connectivity such as mobile augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), cloud gaming, smart factories and meters, and connected vehicles.
Ericsson has been providing T-Mobile with equipment for multi-band 5G networks since 2018.
T-Mobile plans to introduce standalone 5G in 2020.
