WASHINGTON –U.S. Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced the TRACED Act (S. 151) to address the challenge of abusive robocalls. The legislation strengthens enforcement and promotes STIR-SHAKEN, a call authentication standard for certain voice services that will help restore trust in caller ID by addressing the problem of bad actors that disguise their identities by changing the “calling number” field that is transmitted with their calls. “The TRACED Act offers important policy solutions to help protect Verizon customers from illegal and intrusive robocalls. The public welcomes stronger enforcement to help deter these calls. Additionally, the entire industry should adopt the STIR-SHAKEN call authentication standard, which Verizon is already deploying, for IP voice services. On behalf of consumers, Verizon looks forward to working with members of the 116th Congress to improve upon and advance this commonsense legislation.”
