Regional cable operator leverages DOCSIS® provisioning and the unrivaled flexibility of Calix’s AXOS E7-2 and E3-2 systems to deliver symmetrical bandwidth and world-class data services
SAN JOSE – October 23, 2018 – Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX, news, filings) today announced CableSouth Media3 has selected software-defined PON with AXOS to provide services that extend beyond the capabilities of their DOCSIS® based network and deliver symmetrical bandwidth to business customers. One of the most innovative rural cable providers in the country, the Tennessee-based company offers video, data, and telephone services to residential and business customers with networks extending throughout Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The rural cable company is deploying Calix’s AXOS E7-2 Intelligent Modular System, and the E3-2 Intelligent PON Node to deliver on the promise of Software Defined Access (SDA) with a distributed access architecture.
“To provide the quality and reliable connectivity our business customers required, we needed a solution not only tailored to rural deployments but one that was designed to integrate into a cable operator’s service delivery model and back office system,” Alan Taylor, President of CableSouth Media3. “When our technology partner, Momentum Telecom introduced us to Calix, it became clear that their solution was flexible enough to reach all of our subscribers and reliable enough to provide the bandwidth our customers need.”
Momentum Telecom, a Calix technology partner, provides cloud voice, network operation and management services for cable operators and had previously integrated Calix DPx, the industry’s first virtualized DOCSIS network function, into their back office systems. CableSouth Media3 was not only able to leverage their existing hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) infrastructure with Calix PON—built for cable operators—but also seamlessly integrate into the existing back-office systems of Momentum to quickly deliver fiber-based services to its customers. By leveraging universal access systems powered by AXOS, CableSouth Media3 can deploy a future proof network that works seamlessly with existing infrastructure as well as new fiber deployments.
“Connectivity in rural areas presents unique challenges for service providers, and there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution that will meet all their needs,” said John Czeban, area vice president, MSO sales for Calix. “As a result, operators, solutions providers and vendors have become an ecosystem ensuring that service providers all have access to the network systems they need to serve their subscribers, regardless of where they are located. Our goal is to help service providers of all types evolve their business models by upgrading their networks regardless of the underlying infrastructure. We are fortunate to have partners such as Momentum who are helping make this evolution a reality.”
“Given the geographic parameters and the network requirements CableSouth faces, it became apparent that the correct solution for them was DOCSIS provisioned PON, which led us to DPx from Calix,” said Colin Scott, VP of Sales and Account Management at Momentum Telecom. “Implementing this AXOS-based solution not only enables CableSouth to deliver the needed services to their business customers but has also gives them a clear path to upgrade to a completely software defined network architecture.”
