In a 5G, cloud, and gaming world, it’s all about interconnection – DE-CIX Madrid Summit

In September, the second edition of the DE-CIX Madrid Summit took place. More than 100 attendees, experts and decision makers from the Iberian interconnection community, came together in Madrid to get insights into interconnection trends and needs. The insights and discussions were based on examples from the sectors online gaming and car mobility, the latest technological trends and best practices on how to support growing interconnection needs, and the overall strategic development of interconnection in Madrid and on the Iberian Peninsula.

Madrid: A digital hub for Southern Europe

The Madrid Summit was the place where our customers learned first that are opening a new IX in Lisbon, and, in addition, all attendees got insights into a new study from Delfos Research, sponsored by Interxion and DE-CIX, about Madrid and the digital economy in Spain. The study shows that Madrid has the opportunity to become the reference hub of infrastructure and digital business (digital hub) for Southern Europe, which would accelerate the development of the digital economy in Spain. The study can be downloaded here (in English and Spanish).

Unique presentations about interconnection

The presentations held at the Summit highlighted the dependency of businesses like the gaming industry or automotive industry on best-in-class interconnection. Eider Díaz Ascasso from Turtle Entertainment focused on the online gaming business model, which is exploding worldwide, and how the entire user experience fully relies on the quality (availability, latency, security) of the interconnection infrastructure. Latency has to be permanently below 40ms, and this limit will have to be significantly reduced as new formats of online gaming are being developed.

Focus: 5G technology and cloud

Another topic was the absolute need for 5G technology to assist growth, and how cloud is unavoidable. Raul Sejas from Telefonica showes how the 5G technology is being integrated into Telefonica’s infrastructure and services to support the development of IoT and other similar fields of applications demanded by the market (e.g. driver-free car). Javier Martinez from Google Cloud demonstrated the trend of a cloud computing environment: Today, 52% of the computing environment is running on non-cloud models. In 18 months, it is expected to be less than 30% (source: IDG Cloud Computing Survey 2018). He presented four case studies showing the benefits of operating on a cloud model.

Managing transatlantic traffic flows

Last but not least, one focus was the continuing success story of DE-CIX Madrid. With 130 connected ASNs, and the first four 100GE ports connected, DE-CIX Madrid has already created a center of gravity on the Iberian Peninsula. Together with its new twin exchange in Lisbon, it will drive forward interconnection, becoming the new hub for transatlantic traffic flows.

The presentations are not available for download, but you can have a look at some impressions of the day: Watch the event movie or visit the picture gallery.
