The end of a milestone: Sweeping out DE-CIX FRA 7 in Frankfurt

In July, we completed the migration from DE-CIX FRA 7, the former core node at DE-CIX’s largest site in Frankfurt, to DE-CIX FRA12, the new core node with the first automated patch robot. In August, we had to clean up and, finally, leave the old place.

So while the migrated customers were already peering at the new DE-CIX FRA 12 site, the old equipment at DE-CIX FRA 7 was taken down and decommissioned. We pulled out all the cables, racks, and equipment, and transported them to their new homes. And while at our new core node the first automated patch robot, called patchy, was running and patching customers, we cleaned out the old site.

Saying goodbye, with at least one robot in action

After the equipment was gone, the team had one last thing left to do: sweeping up. And two of our engineering team also brought along their personal robot vacuum cleaners. And we realized: we left this site to build up a new one, a shinier one, with a patch robot – but at least we left the old site with a robot in action. Not an automated patch robot, but a robot after all.

As you can see in the picture gallery below, the team had a lot of fun sweeping out DE-CIX FRA 7.

The team said goodbye to our old site, took the vaccum cleaner robots home, and went back to their daily work where, soon, patchy will be normality.

We say goodbye to an old site, and welcome to the new site and the new robot.

Many thanks to the team that put so much effort into making the new site possible!
