The impact of Ericsson’s sustainability and corporate responsibility work

Ericsson is a pioneer when it comes to using information and communication technology to address environmental and climate issues, as well as to boost socio-economic development and support disaster relief. It was one of first companies in the telecom sector to adopt sustainability reporting 25 years ago. The projects concerned contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the activities during 2017 have had a positive impact in many fields.

The Connect to Learn program provided access to quality education for 120,000 students in 25 countries. The largest deployment of this program is in Myanmar, where a generation of students are being empowered through technology.

When hurricane Maria hit the island of Dominica in the Caribbean, the Ericsson Response team was on the ground within 48 hours. The emergency connectivity set up by the team supported more than 2,900 people working for humanitarian organizations across 18 different locations.

Ericsson’s continuous development of new technology also plays an important role when it comes to the environment and preventing climate change. To help minimize energy consumption is an important part of the company’s strategy, and the next generation of mobile telephony (5G) will be up to 90 percent more energy efficient compared to the networks currently being deployed (4G).
