5G technology: Changing the game

Being a running back or a defensive back requires outstanding speed, tremendous agility, and lightning-fast reflexes. Add to those skills everything else a player needs to catch a football in stride or deflect a pass in midair: excellent hand/eye coordination; the ability to instantaneously judge a ball’s height, speed and angle; and the quickness to react to the flight of the ball and make the play. All this has to happen within milliseconds and with precision accuracy. Easy, right?

Now, imagine doing that with only a pair of first-person goggles and a helmet-mounted camera as your “eyes.”

Running back Matt Forte and defensive back Jamal Adams accepted that challenge with the help of 5G technology from Verizon and Ericsson.

Using 5G-connected first-person goggles and helmet cams transmitting video to the goggles over a pre-commercial 5G network, the two players took advantage of 5G’s super high speed and ultra-low latency to show off their own speed and reaction times. They were able to run plays, react to the ball, make catches and deflect passes with the same speed and precision as they could with the naked eye – something that would only be possible in a virtual reality environment running on 5G technology.

The demonstration represented the latest example of how Verizon and Ericsson continue to push the limits of 5G technology by exploring new applications and use cases. In this example, the high capacity and low latency of the 5G-powered experience demonstrated how 5G could mean the difference in catching or missing a pass, with mere milliseconds being the difference. As fun as that can be for this example, or even virtual reality and gaming, imagine how it could transform the worlds of business, manufacturing, healthcare and smart cities.
