PORTLAND, Maine & FREMONT, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Hurricane Electric, the world’s largest IPv6-native Internet backbone, announced today that it has established a new Point of Presence (PoP) at the Maine Fiber Company (MFC). Located at 9 Westland Avenue, Portland, ME, 04101, this is Hurricane Electric’s first PoP in the state.
A dark-fiber leasing company that supports all telecom carriers in Maine, the MFC was formed to oversee the construction, maintenance and leasing of a 1,100 mile, high-capacity fiber optic network throughout the state. The network is comprised of three “rings” of fiber strung through Western, Northern and Downeast Maine, with diverse routes from the Canadian border to Southern New Hampshire. Additional strategic partnerships extend dark fiber capability as far north as Halifax, Nova Scotia and south directly into Boston, Massachusetts.
Hurricane Electric’s move into the region comes at an important time of growth for Maine’s innovation sector. According to a recent report, the state has seen an uptick in technology related employment, with the tech sector currently comprising four percent ($2.3 billion) of Maine’s economy. Additionally, Maine has become home to over 2,600 technology related companies.
With the launch of this new PoP, customers of the Maine Fiber Company and others throughout the state now have access to Hurricane Electric’s vast global network. Going forward, organizations will be able to utilize Hurricane Electric’s extensive IPv4 and IPv6 network through 100GE (100 Gigabit Ethernet), 10GE (10 Gigabit Ethernet) and GigE (1 Gigabit Ethernet) ports and as a result, both new and existing customers will be able to experience increased throughput, reduced latency and improved reliability.
“Hurricane Electric is excited to move into Maine to help meet the demand for high-quality IP transit,” said Mike Leber, President of Hurricane Electric. “We’re delighted that this latest expansion will provide access to our global network to another growing technology market in the Northeast United States, enabling business throughout the region to remain competitive in the global economy.”
