The wholesale sector is the biggest consumer of bandwidth and tends to be the earliest adopter of new technology as a result. At Capacity Europe 2017, the largest carrier event in Europe, held October 23 to 26 in Paris, 2,000+ attendees from the wholesale telecoms ecosystem as well as OTT players, cloud and security providers, will converge to discuss the future of the industry.
We are very proud to be co-hosting the event and Colt COO, Rajiv Datta – one of 50 Top Innovators to watch, according to Capacity Magazine sister publication GTB – is participating on a panel session on day two of the event to discuss the implications of SDN architecture on the commercial network. Colt has always been an early adopter of telecoms technology and is further down the line in terms of network transformation than many of its peers.
The Colt IQ Network, born earlier this year, is built around delivering higher bandwidth services to wholesale and enterprise customers not just in Europe but also Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea.
Colt launched IP access in Singapore a year ago and covers approximately 90% of commercial buildings. The expansion forms part of a €500m investment strategy announced in 2016 that makes Colt the only provider to have a fully-owned fibre metro network in key Asian cities, such as Tokyo, Osaka and Singapore, as well as European locations.
Broadly speaking, the Colt IQ Network is a 100Gbps optimised network distributed to 800+ data centres and carrier hotels around the world. Software Defined Networking (SDNs) and Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) introduce a level of intelligence that means termination points (B-ends) can be moved around to meet demand anywhere on the network or see bandwidth aggregated, for example from 10x10G to 100G.
This level of intelligence also means that the Colt IQ Network is configured the same way across Asia and Europe and has the same set of systems. Whether you’re in London or Berlin, Singapore, Tokyo or Hong Kong, Colt’s intention is that customers should have the same look and feel across all the systems.
We are strong believers in Ethernet services. We’re right at the leading edge of Carrier Ethernet development, supporting the work of MEF. Fast speeds are vital for data centres that are used for cloud services, so when Colt launched Dedicated Cloud Access to the principal data centres back in 2015, we’re taking it to a new level with Colt IQ Network, helping cloud providers build their backbones.
