Together with Finnish operator, DNA, Ericsson demonstrated the use of LTE for public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) in situations where continuous data communications must be guaranteed.
The demonstration was conducted for Finland’s State Security Networks Group (Erillisverkot) and highlighted how the system could share images or videos from the site of a crisis or over group video calls. The tests confirmed that speed and quality of service can be guaranteed for PPDR subscriptions under multilple circumstances, and even over a commercial network.
As part of the tests, dynamic traffic prioritization and pre-emption were verified. Dynamic prioritization refers to the capacity that is required and continuously assigned to PPDR subscriptions. PPDR traffic uses the same frequency band as commercial traffic but in event of a high network load, commercial traffic is then restricted. Pre-emption is a more critical responce compared to dynamic prioritization. IN the event of an exceptional network load it might be nessesary to completely drop the local commercial traffic, making local grid capacity entirely available for PPDR.
The safety of its citizens is the most basic responsibility of a government. Learn more about how Ericsson is helping to keep the public safe.
