Innovation from Ericsson and partner recognized at Glomo Awards

Ericsson has been awarded a Global Mobile Award by the GSMA in a ceremony held at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 28. The “Glomo Awards” are touted as the industry’s leading stage for innovation, excellence and achievement.

Pure Solar Myanmar – a collaboration between Ericsson and Telenor Myanmar – received the Green Mobile Award. In this project Ericsson and Telenor Myanmar worked together to develop highly efficient off-grid radio base station sites that can operate economically on solar power. The total power consumption of the resulting base station sites – including microwave transmission, cabinet fans and controllers – was reduced to just 500 watts, or approximately 25% of a typical site. After just one year of use, a solar-powered test site was found to be more economical than the diesel-powered alternative – and naturally, the solar-powered site is much kinder to the environment. After three to five years of use, Ericsson projects that capital and operation expenditure for the solar-powered site will be half that of the diesel-powered alternative.
