Ericsson and Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), Taiwan’s largest integrated telecommunications services company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to trial 5G, marking an important milestone for Taiwan’s 5G development.
Signed in Barcelona and Mobile World Congress 2017, the MoU calls for Ericsson and Chunghwa Telecom to jointly identify 5G user cases and applications for the digital transformation of selective industry verticals, including transportation and utilities. In addition, the two will work with partners in academic institutions, public offices, industry bodies and enterprises to accelerate ecosystem developments. Both parties will also identify and implement a network evolution strategy from LTE-Advanced to 5G technology.
The joint efforts are expected to create significant value for the Taiwanese people and society in terms that consumers will enjoy the next generation ICT applications and pioneer new 5G services.
Yuan-Kuang Tu, President of Chunghwa Telecom Mobile Business Group, says: “We are confident that we will stand in a good position for the 5G-era based on a combination of our network management know-how and Ericsson’s strong technological power. The two companies will lead network evolution by introducing advanced technologies.”
Chris Houghton, Head of Region North East Asia, Ericsson, says: “We are expecting 5G adoption to begin in the near future, hence we are focusing on ways for the industry to adopt the 5G standard globally, to deliver capabilities and services beyond 4G. Partnerships such as this one with Chunghwa Telecom help push the entire world toward better, faster living and working for people and businesses.”
Signing ceremony with Yuan-Kuang Tu, Chunghwa Telecom President of Mobile Business Group, and President of Ericsson Taiwan Hakan Cervell with witness by David Y Cheng, Chunghwa Telecom Chairman and CEO and Ericsson Head of RNEA Chris Houghton.
