Sprint CapTel Service for Customers with a Hearing Loss Outperforms the Industry in Speed and Accuracy

Company Recognized in 2016 Cositics Performance Index

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – JANUARY 24, 2017 – Sprint (NYSE:S, news, filings) announced today that its CapTel Service for customers with hearing loss has been recognized as a top provider for both its captioning speed and overall accuracy in the 2016 Cositics National Captioned Telephone Service (CTS) Performance IndexSM. The CTS Performance Index measures customer experience based on a set of Key Performance Indicators among device-based IP CTS providers, including several domestic ones.

Sprint CapTel allows users with a hearing loss to read conversations with real-time captions on specially designed telephones. Word-for-word captions appear using the assistance of specially trained Captioning Assistants. Sprint CapTel users are able to speak directly to the other person, listen to what is being said, and read the captions on the phone’s display screen.

Sprint CapTel surpassed the industry average in two critical areas of performance: captioning speed and overall accuracy. With Sprint CapTel, captions appeared on the testers’ phone more quickly with less delay after audio. In addition to overall accuracy, Sprint CapTel users encountered fewer errors such as missing words or sentences or changes to vital information than the industry average.

“We know that our CapTel customers depend on us for fast and accurate captions of their phone calls,” said Mike Ellis, Sprint’s Global Director of Accessibility. “While some providers may focus on either speed or the accuracy of the message, these results from Cositics are clear proof that Sprint CapTel users do not have to choose one over the other. We are committed to ensuring Sprint CapTel customers can use the telephone with confidence.”

Sprint’s CapTel technology was developed by Ultratec, Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of text telecommunications equipment for people with hearing loss. Sprint’s CapTel operations are made possible by CapTel, Inc. (a subsidiary of Ultratec) and Communication Services for the Deaf, the world’s largest non-profit provider of communication services for people with hearing loss.

People with a hearing loss can purchase a CapTel phone or may be eligible for a free captioned phone through special programs. There is no cost to use the captioning service as Sprint CapTel is reimbursed by the federal government for the service as a result of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
