Dark fiber upgrade funded through E-Rate program
BOULDER, Colo. – January 24, 2017 – The Office of Education for a northern California county has selected Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ZAYO) for a dark fiber network that will connect 28 school districts. The 183–mile network includes 173 miles of network in place or already under construction and 10 miles of new build, which will be leveraged for follow-on tenants. The solution also leverages a previously announced network expansion project in the Bay Area.
More than 250,000 students and educators will leverage the higher bandwidth for online resources, streaming media and apps integral to today’s K-12 curriculum.
The district is funding the upgrade through E-Rate, a federal program that subsidizes internet infrastructure so schools and libraries can provide high-speed internet. This is the first year that dark fiber has been included in the program. The solution will provide the county with full network control and the ability to add capacity as needed.
“Dark fiber is a highly scalable, cost-effective solution that provides the county with dedicated, high-capacity infrastructure,” said Dave Jones, executive vice president of Dark Fiber Solutions at Zayo. “They appreciate the flexibility of a solution they can manage themselves to meet the dynamic, long-terms needs of the county.”
Zayo has implemented E-rate projects in Georgia, California, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Texas, Utah and Washington. For more information on Zayo’s E-Rate certified services, visit www.zayo.com/solutions/industries/e-rate-k-12/.
