Zayo positioned to meet infrastructure demand in emerging sector
BOULDER, Colo. – December 20, 2016 – A personal genomics company has selected Zayo for dark fiber and wavelength connectivity. The solution leverages Zayo’s existing fiber network, including dense metro fiber in a major West Coast market.
Over the past five years, advances in DNA sequencing technology have made genomic analysis more efficient and cost effective. As a result, genomics is beginning to be used more widely for personalized treatment. Because every sequenced genome requires extensive computational resources and generates large amounts of data, the bandwidth and infrastructure requirements are substantial.
To accommodate the customer’s growing volume of data, Zayo will provide a dark fiber connection between the company’s headquarters and data center, along with secure, high-bandwidth wavelength connectivity among satellite offices, headquarters and the data center. The transaction represents one of Zayo’s first major sales in this nascent global market, which is expected to exceed $22 billion by 2020, according to Grand View Research.
“Our dark fiber provided a significant competitive advantage in winning this business in an exciting and rapidly expanding market,” said Chris Morley, Zayo’s chief operating officer. “The customer required a solution that could scale to accommodate continued growth, and also wanted the flexibility to use and manage their own equipment. We’re well positioned to provide them both dark and lit services that meet their specific needs — and, more broadly, to meet the growing communications infrastructure demand in this emerging sector.”
