I’m Prepared for What’s Next!

#Sprint4Chi and Youth Guidance Create a Career Conference to Help At-Risk Students in Chicago

Making a difference is what #Sprint4Chi is all about and today, Sprint was able to help more than 40 at-risk students prepare for their next step after high school.

Prepared for What’s Next, a conference put on by Sprint and Youth Guidance, created tremendous opportunities for Chicago students to learn about different areas of a company, how to present their ‘best self’ on a resume, interview do’s and don’ts and dressing for success.

The conference was kicked off by Sprint President for IL/WI, Jim Mills, Sprint Vice President of Enterprise – Central Area, Nelly Pitocco, and Youth Guidance CEO, Michelle Morrison. The speakers shared with the students their own life and career experiences, as well as successes from past ‘Prepared for What’s Next’ conferences.

“I am so excited to be here with all of you today,” said Jim Mills. “Many of you will get a job after high school and after college, and I want you to remember that those jobs will shape your future. The decisions you make now, will follow you in the future, so continue to learn and grow in every position.”

“In order to know what your options are, you have to change your environment,” said Nelly Pitocco. “You are going to shape the future, and you are going to change the future for future generations. Always ask for help when you need it, and use your adversities to empower you.”

Students participated in several workshops throughout the day, which allowed students to interact with industry professionals one-on-one and in a group setting. The breakout sessions were:

  1. Areas of expertise
    • Industry professionals taught students about different areas of a business which included: marketing/public relations, sales/retail, business/finance, and government affairs/law.
  2. Cleaning up your resume
    • Each student was paired with an industry professional to create or build upon their resumes.
  3. Mock interviews & prep
    • This session allowed students to learn about what to do and what not to do during a job interview, then after the students participated in mock interviews with industry professionals.
  4. Dress for success
    • How do you dress for success? Students had to select outfits that they thought were appropriate for job interviews, career fairs and networking events.
  5. Sprint interviews
    • At the end of the day, students were given the opportunity to interview for retail positions at Sprint! Students looked at this as a networking opportunity for a job in the future after high school.

Student’s participation throughout the day geared them up for their final optional workshop, a chance to interview for retail positions at Sprint! As the official sponsor of this event, at the end of the day, Sprint gifted each student with a professional outfit by Banana Republic!

Thank you to our friends at Youth Guidance for their continuous efforts to help at-risk students in Chicago through events like this, and through mentoring programs like Becoming a Man and Working on Womanhood.
