VIRTUS strengthens relationship with world leading IXP
UNITED KINGDOM – 09 February 2016 – VIRTUS Data Centres (VIRTUS), the UK’s fastest growing data centre provider, today announced its LONDON2 data centre has become a Transmission Point of Presence (PoP) for the London Internet Exchange (LINX). As a result VIRTUS customers can now peer on the LINX Juniper and Extreme peering Local Area Networks (LANs), further optimising the award-winning LONDON2 facility.
The agreement gives VIRTUS customers the option to peer with the largest networks in Europe, enabling them to create a low latency resilient network. The Transmission PoP will also serve as a reliable alternative site for clients looking for additional diversity on the LINX LAN that are not currently located within LONDON2.
As well as this improved latency and resilience, VIRTUS customers who become LINX members will also benefit from improved transit performance and routing control, increased capacity and redundancy at lower cost, with the opportunity to peer with over 670 LINX members from 67 countries worldwide. A Transmission PoP is physically based at a neutral data centre giving customers direct access to LINX infrastructure from within the data centre, thus improving performance of its peering connectivity.
The Transmission PoP compliments the already best-in-class solutions at LONDON2. Built from the ground up, it is one of only four data centres in London to have achieved Tier III design certification from the Uptime Institute and the only one certified using Excool’s innovative, green and hyper efficient indirect adiabatic and evaporative fresh air cooling technology – delivering a PUE of less than 1.2 and London’s lowest total cost of service. In addition, the VIRTUS Marketplace means VIRTUS customers have access to a growing ecosystem of connectivity, cloud and service providers.
This move also strengthens VIRTUS’ relationship with LINX, following VIRTUS becoming an official LINX Virtual PoP in 2014. This agreement meant VIRTUS customers in LONDON1 (Enfield) and LONDON2 (Hayes) benefit from being able to connect with other LINX members and exchange low cost Internet traffic without the need to have equipment at a main LINX PoP.
Darren Watkins, Managing Director, VIRTUS Data Centres said: “The ability to utilise a transmission PoP and increasingly peer with LINX members will significantly augment our offering and provide existing customers and members with immediate access to an ever growing range of services. Deploying a LINX transmission node is a great achievement and significantly strengthens VIRTUS’ position; providing customers with direct access to one of the richest connectivity infrastructures available in the UK and further afield.”
Jennifer Holmes, Head of Sales at LINX commented: “We are really excited to be joining forces with VIRTUS once again, with the launch of our first Transmission PoP in London. This will allow even more networks to connect to our peering platforms from a location that only continues to grow in importance, and we are looking forward to working closely with VIRTUS on this new venture.”

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) is a mutually owned membership association for operators of Internet Protocol networks. They provide a neutral interconnection facility and peering platform, known as an Internet Exchange Point (IXP), and represent the interests of their members on matters of public policy.
Their members consist of access networks, ISPs such as BT and content providers like Google, who exchange Internet traffic between each other over their secure peering LANs. Through LINX they are able to reach 80% of the total global Internet making it one of the single biggest connection points in the world.
The London Internet Exchange (LINX) is one of the largest Internet exchanges in the world, connecting over 670 members from over 67 countries around the globe. LINX continues to expand their London presence with over 11 PoPs across the capital along with regional exchanges in Wales, Manchester and Scotland. LINX also operates an Internet exchange in the Ashburn metro area in the US just outside Washington DC.
