Singtel and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC, news, filings) will achieve nationwide deployment in Singapore of a 4G LTE network on 900MHz spectrum band by end March 2016. This enhancement means that Singtel customers will experience even deeper 4G indoor coverage with wider and more consistent network performance.
The deployment leverages low-band LTE frequency, or the LTE-900 to boost existing connections. Singtel is the first and only operator in Singapore to provide tri-band LTE network using 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands[1].
Mr Tay Yeow Lian, Managing Director of Networks, Consumer Singapore, Singtel, says: “Network innovation has always been a priority for Singtel and Singapore has always been an innovation test bed for the Group. This LTE-900 boost is part of our ongoing network investments to deliver an unrivalled 4G LTE experience, which is important to our customers. They can now stream music and videos on-the-go with even greater ease.”
Additionally, the upgrade will also enable Singtel to offer nationwide 3CC (Cell Carrier) Carrier Aggregation technology. This tri-band technology allows Singtel to provide one of the fastest peak mobile throughputs in Singapore with download speeds of more than 300Mbps.
Martin Wiktorin, Country Manager of Ericsson Singapore and Brunei, says: “Ericsson is committed to improving customer experience by adopting the latest world-class technologies and making them available to operators with our industry-leading professional services capabilities. Singtel has always been a trailblazer in enhancing and upgrading its service offerings, and we are proud to share the same determination as we play an important role in the evolution of their network.”
In 2014, Singtel became the first mobile operator in Singapore with a commercial dual-band deployment that reached 300 Mbps speeds, in collaboration with Ericsson. The partnership was further strengthened in 2015 when the two launched the first Tri-band network in Southeast Asia, based on LTE-Advanced technology from Ericsson.
Singtel and Ericsson’s partnership for the commercial roll out of LTE-Advanced services in Singapore was awarded as global winner of 2015 Telecoms.com ‘Pushing the Mobile Limits’ category at an awards ceremony held in London, UK.
