Data Privacy Day — Sprint Reminds You to Protect your Privacy

Sprint joins the National Cybersecurity Alliance as a Data Privacy Day Champion, today, January 28^th, to raise awareness of the importance of protecting your privacy.   At Sprint, we take efforts every day to safeguard and protect customer privacy.   We ask that you partner with us by being a privacy protection advocate on your own behalf.  Please join us in building a culture of privacy by using these practices to help safeguard your personal information:

• Change your passwords and harden them    
  • Experts recommend using upper and lower case numbers combined with letters and signs in a phrase you can remember (ex: Iluvprivacy2!)
  • Vary your passwords – do not use the same password for different sites/apps
  • Write your passwords down, but out of the view of others, if it will help you to be vigilant in using them
  • Do not share your passwords with others

• Safeguard your financial and personal health information, including by shredding documents

• READ the “just-in-time” privacy notices that pop up in apps, on websites, in app stores, and make sure you are comfortable with how your data is collected, used, shared, and secured

• Location data.  Determine when and if to share your location with others by reviewing the Settings on your mobile devices and making thoughtful choices.  In settings, you can toggle location sharing on and off.  

• Data Breach.    If you believe that your personal information may have been impacted by a data breach, there are steps you can take to better protect yourself from harm:

• Consumers under federal law have the right to self-monitor credit reports at the three large credit agencies for FREE once a year.  The only site that offers this free service, as authorized by federal law, ishttps://www.annualcreditreport.com/
  • The U.S. Federal Trade Commission offers several helpful resources on how to protect consumers’ data and identity at  http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/feature-0014-identity-theft .The site explains the steps persons may wish to take in contacting credit agencies to place an Alert or Freeze on their credit file if they are concerned about the misuse of their information.  The FTC also offers anIdentity Theft Affidavit that, if necessary, can be used and shared with law enforcement
