Nokia’s new Fellows – exceptional people, remarkable research

Espoo, Finland – 15 December 2015

Nokia today announced a new group of Nokia Fellows, recognizing their contributions and ongoing work to push the boundaries of technological and scientific research.

Nokia Fellows are a community of individuals who are respected both externally and within the company as true masters within their respective technology fields.

Five Fellows have been selected based on a variety of demanding criteria including: scientific and technology know-how, recognition in their fields of expertise, coaching and influencing skills, cross-functional experience, strategic thinking, industry awareness, business or functional experience, innovation impact, stakeholder engagement and reflection of Nokia values. The list of Fellows will be further expanded in the future.

The appointed Nokia Fellows are:

Timo Ali-Vehmas, Nokia Technologies. Timo has over 30 years’ experience in DSP-based consumer devices R&D and in the mobile devices business. He is recognized as an overall expert in ICT technologies. He played vital roles in the creation of the first GSM mobile device and first 3G/WCDMA mobile devices. He established a process in the radio communication laboratory in the Nokia Research Center which continues to have a remarkable impact on radio technology evolution globally.

Timo participates actively in various forums covering, for example, spectrum management issues in Finland, cloud development for the EU and the future of standardization. He serves as Chairman of the Board of the Nokia Foundation.

Over the last decade, Timo has been leading, researching and practicing Ecosystems Intelligence and Implementation, focusing on a large number of standardization and industry collaboration projects in areas relevant to Nokia. He will be developing ecosystem strategies for the emerging 5G and in new business initiatives.

Timo holds a Master of Science degree in telecommunications and digital signal processing and is currently pursuing his PhD studies.

Amitava Ghosh, Nokia Networks Technology & Innovation. Amitava is a recognized leader in the area of Wireless Communications, and was elected IEEE Fellow in 2015. He co-authored the book “Essentials of LTE and LTE-A”, has written several chapters of industry books and is a reviewer of many other titles. He holds more than 60 issued patents and has 30 patents pending. All of these are licensed, and many are standards essential and generate considerable licensing revenue. He is author or co-author of approximately 90 IEEE conference and journal papers, which have received more than 3,000 citations.Amitava has been involved in 3GPP standardization since 1998. His key tasks include co-developing, driving and promoting Nokia Radio Research, Concepts and Visions. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University, Dallas.

Harri Holma, Nokia Networks Technology & Innovation. Harri is one of the best-known and respected individuals in the wireless domain. He has edited seven of the best-selling books about 3G, 3G evolution and 4G LTE/LTE-Advanced, and has currently started work on a 5G book. He meets actively with customers and gives public presentations on his topics of expertise. He has more than 30 patents, several of them 3GPP essential. Harri joined Nokia Research Center 1994 and completed his MSc from Aalto University. Harri finalized his PhD work about radio network performance in 2003.

Antero Taivalsaari, Nokia Technologies. Antero is best known as the father of Mobile Java (Java™ Platform, Micro Edition, Java ME) – the first truly cross-platform mobile application platform that kick-started the application revolution on mobile phones. Antero is the original author of the K Virtual Machine (KVM) – the system that led to the development of Java ME platform in Sun Microsystems.

Antero is the co-author of three books, author or co-author of approximately 60 refereed scientific publications in international conferences and journals, and recipient of twelve U.S. patents primarily in the area of virtual machines and user interface technologies. He is an invited speaker and workshop organizer for numerous major scientific conferences.In 2006, Antero refocused his work on web technologies, web application platforms and cloud computing. In Nokia Technologies Antero is regarded as the most senior cloud expert. As of summer 2015, he is a Distinguished Architect, Cloud Software, in the Digital Health team of Nokia Technologies. He holds a Doctoral degree in Computer Science (University of Jyväskylä, 1994).

Antti Toskala, Nokia Networks Technology & Innovation. Antti has been recognized for his contribution of over 100 IPR filings with essential patents, mostly for WCDMA/HSPA technology and LTE. He is highly regarded in his field.

Antti has written books on HSPA (in collaboration with T-Mobile USA) and LTE small cells (in collaboration with AT&T), and is currently writing a 5G book (together with NTT Docomo). Earlier he authored a number of books on LTE, HSPA and WCDMA. Since 2000, he has been teaching LTE/LTE-Advanced courses at the University of Oxford.

Antti regularly receives invitations to speak at industry events and was the winner of the 2010 LTE award at the annual LTE world Summit. He is regularly involved in urgent standardization topics with key customers and partner collaborations. In 3GPP his role is recognized role in TGS RAN (HSPA/LTE, and now 5G), and he is active in forums such as the 5G Interest Group.

Antti holds a Master’s degree in Electrical engineering and has 21 years’ experience in the industry.
