Learn More About the Giant Eyeball Antenna

When more than 200,000 music fans took over Grant Park in Chicago this past weekend, there were plenty of shareable moments. Whether fans were snapping selfies from the crowds or connecting with friends, mobile devices were always in-hand.

We helped attendees stay connected and share the most exciting moments. We rolled out one of our newest, high-capacity antennas — the Giant Eyeball Antenna (also known as the Luneburg Lens Antenna).  The Giant Eyeball Antenna provided attendees with 10x the capacity of a traditional single-beam antenna. We also have an Outdoor Distributed Antenna System (oDAS) in Grant Park. This is a network of many small antennas that enhance wireless service within a specific area.  This network power resulted in a lot of mobile data usage in Grant Park this weekend.

Some AT&T mobile network traffic highlights from the downtown Chicago music festival this weekend include:

More than 2.1 TB of data crossed our mobile network at the festival over the first three days combined.

  • 2.1 TB of data is equal to:
  • More than 6M social media posts with photos
  • More than 2,275 hours of HD Video
  • More than 136K hours of surfing the web
