Content Delivery Network Service Provider Akamai books highest bandwidth on any Internet exchange at 12×100 GE
Frankfurt, Germany, June 01, 2015 – Now celebrating its 20th anniversary year, DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet exchange in Frankfurt/Germany, reviews a successful first quarter of this year. Numerous customers are increasing their port size and capacity at the exchange to prepare themselves for the continuously growing volumes of data traffic. In fact, during the first quarter of 2015, customers ordered the same number of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100 GE) ports as they did in all of 2014. Having recently recorded an all-time record peak throughput volume of 4 Terabit/s in Frankfurt, the DE-CIX management team is preparing for an increase in IP traffic levels of 20 percent per year for the foreseeable future.
As an example, Akamai, the global leader in Content Delivery Network (CDN) services, has upgraded its capacity at DE-CIX in Frankfurt to 12×100 GE connections. Delivering 1.2 Terabits per second, this is the largest service provider bandwidth at any Internet exchange worldwide.
CDN providers like Akamai help enterprises to distribute their media, cloud and web content as quickly as possible around the world, such that each end user has a fast and low-latency Internet experience. Akamai is a CDN pioneer and today delivers between 15-30 percent of the world’s Web traffic across its platform, made up of a distributed network of more than 170,000 servers that are deployed across a global network of on-net data centers and ISPs. Unlike others in the CDN industry who follow different approaches, Akamai relies on extensive peering as part of its distribution strategy. Peering is the bilateral exchange of Internet data conducted settlement-free with other service providers at neutral Internet exchanges such as DE-CIX.
DE-CIX and Akamai have worked successfully together for more than 10 years and have also grown internationally in partnership with one another. Akamai participates at all DE-CIX exchanges on three continents: in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, New York and at UAE-IX in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
“Our goal is for our customers’ content to arrive as quickly as possible at its final destination, no matter where in the world the end user is,” says Noam Freedman, Senior Vice President, Networks and Chief Network Architect at Akamai Technologies. “With more than 700 Internet service providers worldwide, DE-CIX is one of our most important Internet exchange providers. With the 2013 implementation of its DE-CIX Apollon technology platform to easily handle 100 GE demands, DE-CIX has made it very easy for us to expand our capacity there. In this way, we’re well-positioned for the growing IP traffic volumes around the world.”
