ADVA Optical Networking Wins BT Sustainability Acclaim

New Logistics Model and Advanced WDM-PON Network Design Hailed as Game Changers

May 06, 2015

… the first company to achieve BFSF silver supplier status and top place in the GCC in the same year.

ADVA Optical Networking announced today that it has won two prestigious BT awards for its forward-looking sustainability program. As a member of BT’s Better Future Supplier Forum (BFSF) since 2013, ADVA Optical Networking has worked closely with BT to reduce its carbon footprint and drive greater sustainability. BT was so impressed by ADVA Optical Networking’s efforts that it awarded the company BFSF silver supplier status. BT also awarded ADVA Optical Networking first place in its Game Changing Challenge (GCC) competition for the development of a new logistics model.

“The BFSF and GCC are gathering momentum with every year. The ideas and creativity we see here to reduce carbon footprint and build a sustainable future are impressive,” said Mark Shackleton, chief technologist, energy and carbon, BT Technology Service and Operations. “This is clearly evidenced with ADVA Optical Networking. What they’ve achieved in such a short space of time is admirable and this is why we’ve given them such recognition. Their GCC submission stood out in so many ways. Not only did they highlight a way to immediately reduce the carbon footprint of our supply chain, but they also flagged a potential future network energy efficiency game changer and outlined how we can build sustainable and energy-efficient networks with WDM-PON technology. ADVA Optical Networking has shown themselves to be a forward-looking company with a clear understanding of how to drastically reduce carbon emissions.”

ADVA Optical Networking is the first company to achieve BFSF silver supplier status and top place in the GCC in the same year. Such acclaim clearly highlights ADVA Optical Networking’s approach to reducing its carbon footprint and driving greater sustainability. ADVA Optical Networking’s GCC award revolved around two key aspects. Firstly, a new logistics model that revolutionizes end-user delivery and return. The main focus here is placing new networking equipment at UPS Access PointTM locations as opposed to delivering to BT warehouses. This enables the engineer to drastically reduce time spent collecting and returning equipment. Secondly, developing a potential future sustainable network consolidation approach using WDM-PON technology. This could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 260,000 tons per year.

“We’re not simply a technology company. We’re a company that is part of our community. We’re a company that is intent on building a better future, a sustainable future,” commented Brian Protiva, CEO, ADVA Optical Networking. “Every member of our global team is focused on reducing waste, lowering carbon emissions and caring for the world around us. It’s part of our DNA. With BT, we’ve found a partner that shares our passions, a company that is truly intent on driving sustainability throughout every aspect of their organization. Winning the GCC and being awarded BFSF silver supplier status in the same year is a phenomenal achievement and something that every member of our team is proud of. But this is only the first step in what promises to be an exciting journey. We look forward to continuing our work with BT and other industry partners, including the Quest Forum.”
