MRV to Lend Software-Defined Networking Expertise as Chair of Open Networking Foundation’s Migration Project

Innovative project brings together real-world knowledge and experience in SDN migrations

CHATSWORTH, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Apr. 29, 2015– MRV Communications ™, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVC) (“MRV®”), a global provider of innovative packet and optical solutions, today announced its director of technology, Edna Ganon, has been nominated as chair of the Open Networking Foundation’s (ONF) Migration project, formerly the Migration Working Group. ONF is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and adoption of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) through open standards development. The objective of ONF’s Migration project is to help accelerate the adoption of open SDN, an emerging architecture that decouples the network control and forwarding functions enabling the network control to become directly programmable and the underlying infrastructure to be abstracted for applications and network services. Under the leadership of Ganon, ONF’s Migration project will work closely with global operators and users of networks (carrier, data center and enterprise) to share real-world knowledge and experience in software-defined network migrations.

The Migration project is one of four focus groups within ONF’s Operator Area technical community which works to gather and validate network operator requirements, priorities, tradeoffs and vision. The Migration project focuses on producing methods and recommendations for migrating network services from a traditional network, such as a data center network or wide-area network, to an OpenFlow™-based software-defined network. As part of its next milestones, the Migration project is currently working to implement a prototype and demo of a real-world SDN migration use case, validating some of the methods, tools and metrics investigated and recommended in previous deliverables.

“ONF’s Migration project is working to define benchmarks pertaining to the migration to, and deployment of, SDN, including such deliverables as use cases, opportunity statements, actionable requirements for carrier-grade and migration best practices,” said Dan Pitt, executive director of the Open Networking Foundation. “In her career, Edna has been a facilitator for educating the industry, through proof-of-concept demonstrations and actual implementations, on the revolutionary capabilities and innovations enabled by SDN. We are looking forward to working with Edna and benefiting from her collaborative leadership, vast technical expertise and key insights into the emerging SDN market.”

Ganon has over 25 years of communications industry experience in technology, engineering and product management and development. Ganon has represented MRV in MEF, IEEE and ITU standard bodies, and led many of MRV’s new product designs and patents.

“MRV offers over two decades of packet and optical networking experience and as part of our long-term strategy, we are fully committed to ONF’s SDN Migration project. Our ongoing willingness to collaborate with the technical community on open standard initiatives will allow the industry to fully realize the unprecedented programmability, automation, agility and control that can only be achieved with an open SDN architecture,” said Zeev Draer, vice president of strategic marketing for MRV Communications. “We are confident that through her leadership within the Migration project, Edna will help to drive SDN adoption by furthering the development of interoperable solutions that address real-world challenges and ensure the successful evolution from legacy architectures to new, software-driven services and network architectures.”
