Huawei and Telefonica Complete Industry’s First SDN-based IP/Optical Field Trial

[Shenzhen, China, March 30, 2015] Huawei and Telefonica today announced the successful completion of a joint field trial for a Software-defined Networking (SDN)-based IP and Optical Synergy with Telefonica Peru subsidiary.

Huawei initially partnered with Telefonica to complete a proof of concept lab test one year ago. The success of this field trial is the key milestone to finally commercializing the SDN-based IP and Optical Synergy solution.

The field trial network was setup using mesh topology, in Lima, the capital of Peru. The network contained OSN8800 as ROADM, OSN9800 as packer-aware OTN switches, NE40E as service routers and NE5000E as core routers to form a fully Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching/Optical Transport Network/ Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (IP/MPLS/OTN/ROADM) multilayer network. The controller and orchestrator are based on Huawei’s commercially available Smart Network Controller (SNC) and NetMatrix.

The network control architecture is based on existing standard blocks defined within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) (including Path Computation Element Protocol (PCEP) and Virtual Network Topology Manager (VNTM)), interworking with distributed IP/MPLS and Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) control plane to enable network automation, simplified service provisioning and multi-layer restoration. The field trial has successfully conducted all test cases related to the network automatic provisioning, multi-layer service provisioning, multi-layer network restoration, path diversity and shared risk link group avoidance.

Telefonica and Huawei continue to engage in promoting SDN-based IP and Optical Synergy solution standardization and commercial deployment. The Telefonica Peru field trial network will progress onto a real traffic pilot phase and finally, commercially deployment. Telefonica partners with Huawei and other vendors to setup test beds for multi-vendor inter-operation testing in Telefonica T+D lab.

Huawei is committed to developing SDN architectures that support operator business transformations and innovations. These architectures will help operators improve operational efficiency, achieve flexible service deployment, and open network capabilities. To date, Huawei has carried out over 40 joint innovation projects with leading global operators, and is the industry leader for SDN commercialization.
