Ericsson’s new media delivery solution places operators at the core of the value chain

  • Ericsson launches significant evolution of its Media Delivery Network (MDN) solution with all-new enablers – MDN Cache, MDN Optimize, and MDN Connect
  • Ericsson first to address widespread media delivery challenges with a unique combination of technical capability and business enabler software tools
  • The solution puts operators at the core of the media delivery value chain, enabling them to maximize network value and create all-new business models in a high-growth area of TV & Media

With the unprecedented growth in demand for mobile broadband, driven by video consumption, Ericsson (ERIC) believes that the viability of the entire media delivery value chain is dependent on the ability of network operators to transform into a media-centric business.

At Mobile World Congress 2015, Ericsson is taking the industry lead in addressing this trend with the launch of a highly evolved and unique software solution set, designed to allow operators to participate in the media value equation in a sustainable and profitable way.

Ericsson`s Media Delivery Network – the single, all-software solution for the delivery of both managed and unmanaged content across fixed and mobile networks – has now evolved into a complete business enabler framework. Ericsson MDN combines a unique set of elements (Cache, Optimize, and Connect) to respectively tackle all of the main challenges of media delivery: greater network efficiency, enhanced quality of experience and value-added services. By opening up opportunities for network operators, including pay TV service providers, to capitalize on video-specific revenues, Ericsson continues to drive the shift to a true TV Anywhere environment and realize the vision of a media industry transformed in the Networked Society.

Ove Anebygd, Vice President and Head of Solution Area Media, Ericsson, says: “With video already representing 45% of all traffic in mobile networks, and our prediction that traffic will increase eight-fold overall by 2020, network operators need a transformative media delivery solution. This allows them to turn this costly demand on their networks into sustainable business growth.”

“This launch represents the first big-picture solution of its kind, tackling core industry challenges and allowing operators to bring their added value to the media delivery value chain and enable the global shift to IP delivered video.”

Rob Gallagher, Director of Media, Entertainment & Consumer Research, Ovum, comments: “Bridging the technical and commercial gaps between network operators and digital media providers promises to be a win-win for both parties – provided they work together for mutual gain. The most successful partnerships will be based on technologies and strategies that enable network operators to solve digital media providers` key business challenges as well as their own.”

The evolved Media Delivery Network capabilities now include:

  • Cache – a virtualized, elastic, universal caching node which can be deployed at any level in the network
    • First to offer virtualized services across public, private and hybrid cloud infrastructures
    • Provides a ground-breaking compute framework, enabling content provider functionality to be hosted at the optimal level of the operator network
  • Optimize – an ultra-intelligent, service-aware gateway with a powerful set of capabilities combining policy management with traffic, web, and video optimizations.
    • Delivers the most accurate optimization of cell bandwidth for combating congestion
    • Offers an array of all-new multi-screen edge services enabling innovative offerings  such as ad fraud detection
  • Connect – this powerful business framework introduces ready-made relationships with essential industry players, deepening the opportunity and speed with which operators can drive business models and commercial opportunities
    • Builds upon the previously announced, first of its kind, plug-in ecosystem of multiple global content distribution networks (CDNs)
    • Now offering business consultative services focused on key industry challenges, addressing all new business models such as sponsored data and operator toolbars
