University of Nebraska Reinvents Fan Experience Inside Memorial Stadium

NeuLion College Platform and Cisco Connected Sports Solutions enable more than 150,000 devices to connect during this year’s home football season and access new game-day mobile app that delivers personalized experience and exclusive video

NEW YORK, N.Y. – NeuLion, Inc. (TSX: NLN), the leading enabler and provider of live and on-demand content to Internet-connected devices, the University of Nebraska Athletics and Cisco Sports and Entertainment, today announced at the 13th annual IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum the success of the new Nebraska game-day mobile app first used during the 2014 football season. The app leverages state-of-the-art technology coupled with exclusive content to provide fans with a one-of-a-kind fan experience inside of Memorial Stadium.

Launched at the start of the Nebraska football season, more than 150,000 fan devices connected to an all new in stadium wireless network powered by a Huskers branded game-day app during this year’s home games. The app provided fans in the stadium with a unique connected experience by delivering personalized access to in-depth information about the game, exclusive videos only available inside the stadium as well as rosters, bios, real-time stats and venue maps with concession stands, restrooms and more.

“There is nothing like the live experience of attending a game at Memorial Stadium, we wanted the digital experience to be one of a kind also,” said Kelly Mosier, director of digital communications for the University of Nebraska athletic department. “Fans expect to be able to connect to the outside world at all times, so we wanted to stay ahead of the curve. To do that we needed to install a robust wireless network and looked to use that network to provide our fans with a unique video experience that would put them at the center of the action. We rolled portions of the new app for football fans and had great success and we are going to offer the same fan experience inside our basketball arena.”

Nebraska Athletics has worked with NeuLion to integrate with Cisco Connected Stadium Wi-Fi and StadiumVision Mobile, as well as additional integration services to offer video feeds delivered by EVS. The fully integrated solution offered an unparalleled wireless experience at home games using a high-density Cisco Wi-Fi network that utilized more than 800 access points to ensure that fans anywhere inside the 85,000-plus seat Memorial Stadium and in the surrounding areas inside and outside the Stadium could reliably connect, interact and share.

With expanded connectivity and video feeds, the game-day app powered by NeuLion gave fans inside the venue the ability to choose between multiple camera angles of live video streams. These included the big-screen broadcast video feed from the scoreboard, an alternate angle view, an “all-22” camera view like what coaches use to see all the players simultaneously across the entire field, as well as additional game-day replays.

“The NeuLion College Platform, coupled with Cisco and EVS, was the most extensive in-venue implementation in the college space and impacted more than 30 percent of the in-stadium fan base in the first year,” said Chris Wagner, EVP of NeuLion. “Fans are demanding the technology we deliver, and it is clear that when colleges like Nebraska customize the experience, by allowing fans to choose how and what they want to watch during the game, the response will be strong and will continue to grow in coming years. We are proud to have participated in enhancing the fan experience at Memorial Stadium.”

“The University of Nebraska has proven to be a visionary organization in the college sports landscape, and by creating an improved in-game experience through technology, they made a strong statement to their fans,” said Ken Martin, Director of Sales, Cisco Sports & Entertainment. “Collaborating with NeuLion, along with EVS and CDW, provided us with a strong team to ensure Husker fans have a top-notch, interactive experience and remain engaged in highly compelling visual content. Nebraska has positioned itself well to capture opportunities in the Internet of Everything, and as more people, processes, data and things become connected, they will be able to offer fans a more immersive experience and drive efficiencies and additional revenue.”
