Telefonica and Ericsson connect the Peruvian Amazon with 4G/LTE

  • Telefonica Peru, together with Ericsson, implement first rural connectivity project in Latin America to provide internet to Amazon communities with 4G/LTE technology
  • Project connects schools and healthcare centers, among others, to the internet
  • Demonstrating Ericsson’s commitment to Technology for Good, connectivity aims to increase social inclusion, foster economic growth, and contribute to a better quality of life for thousands of people

Telefónica Peru and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC, news, filings) are jointly implementing a project to provide internet access via 4G/LTE to governmental entities, such as schools and healthcare centers, in the Peruvian Amazon during 2015.

This is the first project in Latin America to use 4G technology as fixed wireless internet access in remote rural areas with difficult geography, such as that of the Amazonian jungle. With over 500,000 square kilometers, the Peruvian Amazon has some of the greatest biodiversity and largest amount of old-growth forest in the world.

Research carried out by Ericsson and analyst firm Arthur D. Little has concluded that for every 10 percentage point increase in broadband, the GDP of a nation increases by 1 percent, Providing internet access will not only help with reducing the digital gap and fostering economic growth, but also provide people in these isolated areas everything the online world can offer in terms of education, job creation and a better quality of life.

Cesar Linares, General Manager, Telefónica Peru, says: “This kind of project is crucial for the development of the country, since it connects rural areas not only with the rest of Peru, but also with the whole world. Connectivity brings innumerable benefits that translate into socio-economic development, especially in remote and inaccessible areas.”

Eduardo Ricotta, Vice President, Ericsson Latin America, says: “This effort marks another landmark in the alliance both companies share in social impact projects and, at the same time, further consolidates the leadership of Ericsson in networks in the region, connecting extremely rural areas with the latest in 4G mobile broadband technology.”

Ericsson is present today in all high traffic LTE markets including US, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Canada, and has been selected by the top 10 LTE operators as ranked by LTE subscription worldwide. More than 200 LTE RAN and Evolved Packet Core networks have been delivered worldwide, of which more than 150 have are live commercially
