Santiago Signs a Collaboration Agreement with Cisco Chile to turn Santiago into a ‘Smart City’

– The agreement aims to explore initiatives to advance the development and application of tools that provide solutions to the generation of a technologically advanced and integrated city.

Santiago, Chile, and Barcelona, Spain, December 10, 2014. – During an official visit to Barcelona and with the aim of Santiago becoming a “Smart City,” the Metropolitan Regional Government of Santiago signed a collaboration agreement with Cisco® Chile that will take advantage of Cisco’s vision for the Internet of Everything in cities.

The integration of Cisco Chile as part of the project Santiago Smart City is part of the quest to find the best allies at the international level to allow for greater efficiency and coordination and, ultimately, to improve the quality of life of the people of Santiago.

For Claudio Orrego, Intendente of Santiago, “One of the products that we will have through this agreement is to work together with cities that today work with Cisco ‑ for example, San Francisco and Barcelona ‑ where the availability of free Internet wireless for citizens has been the basis for the generation of security and transport applications that are improving the quality of life of all citizens.”

Another objective to be achieved with the signing of the agreement, which was attended by the Regional Counselors Claudia Faúndez, Rodolfo Seguel, Felipe Berrios and Ignacio Ruiz-Tagle, is workshops to develop smart cities together, participate in an Executive Briefing Center (EBC) and make a Smart Cities Protocol for the City of Santiago.

“One of the projects that we hope will be emblematic is the possibility to illuminate large areas of population in Santiago ‑ for example, Alameda and some other places in town ‑ so people can access not only free Internet, but also to occupy that infrastructure and the public Internet for the service of citizens,” said Orrego, adding, “It is an honor and a tremendous opportunity for Santiago to have Cisco as an ally, company that developed Internet in the world, to make this exchange with other cities, a commitment to service technology for citizenship.”

Gabriel Calgaro, general manager of Cisco Chile, maintains that “this agreement is further evidence of the commitment of Cisco to provide resources and share best practices for the development of the world, and this way, governments, businesses and individuals can fully exploit the Internet of Everything. Through this initiative, Cisco will improve the lives and businesses, both in public and in private, opening social, economic and environmental unprecedented opportunities.”

The Plan Santiago Smart City from the Metropolitan Regional Government of Santiago seeks to improve the quality of life of people, delivering digital information and tools to make decisions about how to inhabit the territory. For this they have carried out various initiatives such as the signing of an agreement with the Secretariat of Economy, a partnership that aims to generate a pilot project in the metropolitan region in the context of the Digital Agenda that seeks, through the application of ICT, greater efficiency and effectiveness of resources.
