In its new report, entitled “2014 Network Managed Services Competitive Review” ABI evaluates the managed services capabilities of four vendors including Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, and Alcatel-Lucent, with Huawei ranked either as the leader or highly competitively across all of the major categories examined.

In conducting its evaluation, ABI assessed over 50 aspects of each vendor’s portfolio encompassing services for outsourced network functions, adjacent services that are not network operations, and service depth of managed services. ABI then grouped the 50 individual line items, applying weighted average assessments to each, into nine labels around three categories, specifically:

(Category 1: Network Fundamentals)

Build: Plan, design, and build managed service processes and frameworks

Operate: Operate, transfer

Optimize: Optimize and manage network performance

Touch: Operations directly related to customer interaction

Transform: Convergence of IT, telecom, fixed, and mobile

Reach: Relative size managed services organization

Retain: Operator satisfaction as measured by contract history

(Category 3: Service Depth)

Adjoin: Managed services other than network operations

Expand: New service offerings as growth opportunities

For the network fundamentals category, assessing the outsourced network operations performed by service provides, Huawei and Ericsson tied for the top score followed by Nokia and then Alcatel-Lucent. For the change agency category, addressing the capability of service providers to make a meaningful transformation involving the convergence of mobile and fixed line and also telecom and IT, Huawei ranked as top followed by Ericsson, Nokia, and then Alcatel-Lucent. For the service depth category, examining a service provider’s innovations to expand the managed service value proposition into adjacent business functions of the operator, Huawei ranked second behind Ericsson followed by Alcatel-Lucent and then Nokia.

ABI’s report also provides forecasts for the managed services industry citing Huawei as joint market leader along with Ericsson in 2013 with 30 percent market share. If current trends continue, ABI expects that by 2019, Huawei will achieve industry leadership with 35 percent of the world’s market share.

Mr. Joe Hoffman, Practice Director, Networks, ABI Research said, “Our findings show Huawei is the fastest growing managed service provider. Their orchestration of managed services resources reach across customer silos for fixed, mobile and IT domains. Huawei spans business, network, and operations with their total service solution and are positioned to succeed as a leading operational transformation partner helping operators manage the convergence of mobile, fixed, IT, and telecom domains.”
