Cologix Upgrades and Expands Leading Data Center Presence in Jacksonville

$20M project will upgrade every element of critical infrastructure in the Carrier Hotel and add significant power to nearby Class 5 Hurricane Resistant facility

DENVER & JACKSONVILLE, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jacksonville is fast becoming an important interconnection point connecting Internet traffic between North and South America, which telecom research group TeleGeography recently cited as the highest capacity route between the continents. In addition, it continues to be a very important enterprise market with many large public and private enterprises calling Jacksonville home. Cologix, a network-neutral interconnection and data center company, announced today two major projects at each of their data centers in the market.

The Cologix JAX1 data center at 421 W. Church St., where Cologix operates the Meet-Me-Room and facilitates access to the greatest density of Carriers in the market, is currently undergoing a comprehensive end-to-end infrastructure upgrade.

The project will add additional utility capacity and square footage to provide new inventory for networks and content providers interested in establishing connections with the two new subsea cable systems that are landing directly in Jacksonville from Central and South America. Customers, suppliers and peers of the subsea cable systems see redundancy benefits from complementing existing connections in Miami. At the same time customers enjoy latency and cost benefits by creating express routes to South America, bypassing terrestrial networks down the Florida peninsula and through legacy interconnect sites that are by definition, not carrier neutral. The JAX 1 project includes the complete replacement of old infrastructure with new, including two new 1 MW generators configured 2N, new ATSs, UPS systems, DC plant, chillers, an upgraded secure managed Meet-Me-Room and enhanced security infrastructure to augment the 24×7 on-site staffing. The project will be complete by late 1Q 2015.

“In addition to new capacity, our JAX1 project will upgrade the existing data center to better reflect its growing importance on the global network map,” explains Grant van Rooyen, chief executive officer, Cologix. “We are bringing the facility to Cologix’s high standards and enabling our customers to focus their attention on taking advantage of the disruption that is changing the way Internet traffic flows between continents. There will not be a more reliable and scalable place to interconnect than in our JAX1 facility.”

The Cologix JAX2 facility, located at 4800 Spring Park Road, is the most important enterprise colocation and disaster recovery facility in the region. The campus is owned by Cologix and is designed to comfortably withstand a Class 5 Hurricane. Many large public and private enterprises call the data center home and, in order to meet the ongoing growth of those customers and future prospects, Cologix is dramatically expanding the power capacity at this location. The project includes the addition of two brand new 2 MW CAT generators (in addition to the three 1.25 MW CAT engines on-site already), three new 750 KW Mitsubishi UPSs and an upgrade to two new 3750 KVA transformers on the site. The project is expected to be complete in 1Q 2015. “I have been thoroughly impressed by the Cologix team’s approach to expanding our power infrastructure at the JAX2 facility,” said Doug Recker, former Colo5 CEO and now VP and GM for Cologix Florida. “They comprehensively planned for this upgrade during the acquisition and hit the ground running immediately after we closed. This power expansion will allow our current and prospective customers to scale their IT infrastructure in this site predictably, well into the future.”
