[Shenzhen, China, October 16, 2014]: Huawei today announced that it will deploy its XG-PON (also known as 10G-GPON) solution for Telefónica in Spain, enabling the operator to provide Fibre to the Home (FTTH) services to customers at symmetrical speeds of up to 1Gbps, boosting connection speeds by up to ten times faster than current fibre-based services when it launches in 2015.
As the future standard for optical fiber subscribers, the XG-PON solution will ensure Telefónica remains competitive in the fierce Spanish FTTH market. Huawei’s XG-PON technology is capable of delivering Internet access speeds of up to 10Gbps, providing the operator with a future-proof solution that can be leveraged to augment speeds further on Telefónica’s network beyond the 1Gbps that would be offered at launch next year.
At connection speeds of 1Gbps, Telefonica subscribers will be able to upload and download large volumes of online data and content such as pictures, videos and movies 100 times faster than what is possible with a 10Mbps connection. This will also provide a user experience when accessing content online that is comparable to accessing that information on a user’s own hard disk, facilitating instant sharing and storage of high-quality multimedia content and data through a Cloud-based network.
The two companies have successfully conducted tests on Telefónica’s network where symmetrical download and upload speeds of 1Gbps were achieved using the Huawei XG-PON solution. This will allow download speeds that are ten times faster than the current speed of 100Mbps, and upload speeds that are 100 times faster than the 10Mbps upload speed possible today.
The Huawei XG-PON solution will also transform online sports broadcasting for viewers. For instance, Telefónica customers will be able to select the camera angle from which they prefer to view a football match, and view the program at resolutions that will be four times sharper than transmission over conventional HD.
As the global leader in access networks, Huawei’s SingleFAN (fibre access network) solutions are currently serving over a third of all broadband customers worldwide. By providing ultra-broadband services to end users, Huawei solutions are helping to build a better connected world.
