TeliaSonera Deploys Huawei Blade Site Solution in Lithuania

[Vilnius, Lithuania, September 15, 2014]: Huawei and Omnitel have deployed the Huawei Blade Site wireless base station solution for commercial use in Lithuania, the world’s first commercial deployment of this next-generation solution. The deployment of Huawei’s Blade Site solution – a core offering under the innovative Huawei SingleRAN® solution portfolio – will support Omnitel, the leading mobile operator in Lithuania and a part of TeliaSonera Group, in addressing challenges in site acquisition. The collaboration builds on the successful modernization of the operator’s radio access network earlier this year, where Omnitel and Huawei have established an innovative network in Vilnius to achieve faster commercialization of the latest mobile technology.

The Huawei Blade Site solution uses industry-leading baseband and wireless base station engineering technology. It is environmentally harmonious and can be installed across different sites and locations, for example, it is easily mountable on walls, poles, roof top and other “zero footprint” locations, significantly enhancing installation efficiency and reducing site deployment time by up to 75 percent. The solution also supports flexible combinations of Baseband Unit (BBU), Radio Frequency (RF) and power modules, and Global System for Mobile (GSM), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and LTE three-mode concurrent operations, presenting an effective solution to operators for deployment at complex sites. A wireless base station has become the standard for network construction, and the Huawei Blade Site solution efficiently utilizes the limited site footprint to enhance the network capacity, providing users with a better broadband experience and helping to build a more valuable mobile broadband network.

Mindaugas Varanauskas, Chief Technology Officer, Omnitel, said, “Omnitel is a market leader in technical innovations and has the largest 4G LTE network in the country, covering more than 65 percent of the Lithuanian population. As we continue our 4G network roll-out across Lithuania, the deployment of the Huawei Blade Site solution will accelerate the speed of network construction and reduce operational expenses, enabling us to deliver on our goal of providing the best 4G network experience to our customers more efficiently.”

Lu Yong, President, Huawei Central and Eastern Europe and Nordic region, said, “This joint innovation solution between Huawei and Omnitel in Lithuania is the world’s first commercial use of the Huawei Blade Site solution. Huawei and TeliaSonera Group will build on our strategic partnership to achieve greater business success through the deployment of more innovative and competitive solutions in the region.”

The deployment of Blade Site solution in Lithuania is the world’s first large-scale commercial use of this solution, and highlights the innovative ambition of Omnitel and Huawei in leveraging leading wireless solutions to offer consumers with a better user experience. To date, Huawei’s Blade Site solution has been tested by more than 10 operators worldwide and further commercial deployment by leading operators is expected by the end of this year.
