Nokia Liquid Radio raises the bar with capacity gains, ensuring users connect even in busiest metropolitan areas #NetworksPerform

Megacities and other crowded zones require increasingly dense, innovative networks

New Liquid Radio hardware and software launches enable operators to create very high density networks, satisfying swelling capacity demand and boosting user experience across LTE-Advanced and HSPA mobile broadband networks

September 3, 2014

Espoo, Finland – Nokia Networks is launching the Flexi Metro Remote Radio Head (RRH), 60MHz carrier aggregation for LTE and new software features for Liquid Radio* to create even higher density macro networks** with extreme capacity and throughput to satisfy user expectations. This range of enhancements is supported by Nokia’s Services for HetNets*** and actively addresses the capacity needs associated with the megatrends of accelerating urbanization, connectivity and convergence.

The new Nokia Flexi Metro RRH for LTE enables operators to build extremely dense networks in the busiest metropolitan areas using existing macro network sites. This facilitates higher throughput for their customers, and its small volume (<5 liters) and light weight (<5 kg) allow operators to take advantage of a wide range of sites typically unsuitable for conventional units. The RRH’s sensitivity can be tuned and output varied from 2 x 5W down to 2 x 50mW to match any deployment’s need for high capacity mobile broadband. Combined with Nokia’s Centralized RAN, the Nokia Flexi Metro RRH allows more cells to be concentrated in a given area.

“Operators are densifying their networks by splitting macro cells or adding more network layers for the vital extra capacity needed especially in metropolitan areas,” said Thorsten Robrecht, vice president, Mobile Broadband portfolio management at Nokia Networks. “As the distance between cells decreases and network layers increase, mobile devices cause greater interference. Liquid Radio realizes the full performance of high density macro networks with increased cell density, less interference and maximum throughput.”

Additionally, software enhancements to Nokia Networks LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation**** now enable evolution to 60MHz aggregation bandwidth in LTE and TD-LTE, delivering up to 450Mbps peak downlink rates, as supported by upcoming Category 9 devices.

Likewise, a large portion of mobile traffic is carried over HSPA, requiring efficient interference cancellation in busy areas. Nokia Networks is launching Enhanced HSUPA Interference Cancellation, a new Liquid Radio WCDMA Software Suite feature that reduces interference for up to 60% gain in uplink throughput to fit up to 30% more users per cell.

Centralized RAN***** is also now supported by Liquid Applications to deliver locally-relevant, fast services directly from high density network locations.

Other new functionalities within the Nokia Liquid Radio Software Suite that meet increased performance needs in high density networks include:

  • HSPA Carrier Aggregation with Dual-Band HSDPA: uses two 5MHz WCDMA carriers on different bands to double downlink peak rates to up to 42Mbps and Dual-Cell HSUPA enables devices to upload data simultaneously over two adjacent carriers to raise peak transfer rates to 11.5Mbps – both supported by upcoming terminals.
  • LTE-WCDMA and LTE Intrafrequency Load Balancing for effective load balancing: helps operators eliminate congestion in highly loaded networks and better optimize resources between users.
  • HSPA rapid receiver for high-speed trains enables operators to deliver better voice quality and faster uploads for passengers commuting (at 250-350 km/h) in and out of megacities and other busy areas.

Nokia’s Services for HetNets help solve the complexities of deploying high density networks for operators. Overall costs can be reduced by adding capacity in an intelligent manner, only where and when it is needed. Advanced planning and optimization services ensure that all layers of the network work seamlessly for subscribers.

Notes:
* Nokia Liquid Radio helps operators meet the constantly changing capacity demands of mobile broadband in the most effective way. It adapts the capacity and coverage of radio networks to match the fluctuating user demand. Innovative dynamic software and flexible multi-technology hardware platforms enabling new network architectures makes Liquid Radio self organized and extremely adaptive. Liquid Radio enhances mobile broadband operators’ resource utilization, thus reducing TCO and offering an improved customer experience.

** Suitable for large metropolitan areas, high-density macro networks are seamless multi-layer, multi-technology networks serving huge capacity and coverage demands, while at the same time delivering high Quality of Experience for subscribers.

*** Nokia Networks’ Services for HetNets helps operators to solve urban congestion by delivering the best performing heterogeneous networks. Nokia provides the deepest analysis of hotspots to help operators understand the impact of traffic density – as well as the usage and behavior of devices and applications. The integration of small cell radio and backhaul design, together with macro, in-building, and Wi-Fi solutions delivers a holistic approach.

***** At MWC 2014, Nokia Networks launched new software that is capable of activating the hidden performance of networks and thus potentially tripling the uplink capacity in existing LTE networks, without any additional hardware investments. Nokia Centralized RAN links together multiple base stations and turns the interference into useful traffic, especially in dense traffic areas with a large number of smart devices. It was recently recognized with the prestigious Leading Lights 2014 Award for Best New Product (Mobile). The Centralized RAN baseband module can be deployed with Nokia Radio Application Cloud Server (RACS) functionality to enable Liquid Applications in dense areas. RACS provides processing and storage, together with the ability to collect real-time network data. These features can be exploited by applications to offer context-relevant services that transform the mobile broadband experience. Liquid Applications offers caching and local offload for stadium, festival and concert deployments, as well as enabling operators to provide value added services to facilities where it is deployed.
