Expanding International High Capacity Services Throughout Southwest Ireland
DUBLIN, IRELAND – July 23, 2014 – Hibernia Networks, a provider of global telecommunications services, announces that it has added Cork Internet eXchange (CIX), the regional data centre for Southwest Ireland, as a new Point of Presence (PoP) on its network. The PoP allows Hibernia to further expand its high capacity, international services throughout Cork, Munster and the island of Ireland.
Built in 2007 and open for business in March 2008, CIX is a critical piece of communications infrastructure for Cork and Munster. The facility is responsible for delivering IP connectivity to thousands of businesses and tens of thousands of homes from Kerry to Waterford via large telcos and regional Internet Service Providers (ISPs). CIX connects upstream to an extensive list of fiber providers and has a 30-meter telecommunications mast onsite, with a line of sight to Cork City and Cork County.
“Hibernia’s presence in CIX further demonstrates our commitment to providing secure, reliable, high performance connectivity throughout the island of Ireland,” states Bjarni Thorvardarson, CEO of Hibernia Networks. “Additionally, the connection allows CIX to further reach Europe, North America and the international marketplace, resulting in increased communications and next-generation Internet service for local and regional businesses.”
“By tapping into Hibernia’s international, low latency network,” continues Jerry Sweeney, CEO of CIX, “the exchange is able to extend its reach to the larger global economy and provide fast, low latency bandwidth to its Irish customers.”
Furthermore, CIX customers will gain access to Hibernia’s Project Kelvin network. Project Kelvin is an extensive submarine and terrestrial cable deployment that directly connects Northern Ireland to North America and Europe. The subsea cable comes ashore at Portrush, Northern Ireland and connects to Hibernia’s terrestrial fiber optic ring consisting of over a dozen Irish towns and cities, providing local and global commerce opportunities between the island of Ireland and the rest of the world.
