Zain KSA, Nokia run Liquid Applications on live network, a first for Middle East & Africa

03 June 2014

Espoo, Finland – Liquid Applications*, a Nokia solution which enables innovative services and revolutionizes the mobile broadband customer experience, was successfully demonstrated by Zain KSA and Nokia in Saudi Arabia last week. The demonstration was first of its kind in the Middle East and Africa, and was carried out in Zain’s live network, powered by Nokia’s radio and core network elements. The demonstration showed improved throughput and more efficient transmission between the base station and core network.

Liquid Applications, an industry first solution, brings superior services to mobile broadband customers. This is achieved by bringing applications, services and content into the base station to allow local storage, along with access to real-time radio and network information. This turns base stations into hubs for local service creation and delivery. By using Liquid Applications, operators can offer subscribers an enhanced service experience by providing them with better throughput and customized applications such as augmented reality and location-based services.

“We are committed to introducing new services to thrill our customers by exploring and adopting the latest technologies available on the market,” said Sultan AlDeghaither, Senior Director of Network Engineering, Zain KSA. “In response to our customers’ demand for the best mobile broadband experience, we never stop optimizing our network, and we believe Nokia’s Liquid Applications is one of the unique solutions that can offer entirely new service experiences. The demonstration in our live network proves that the solution has the capability to take the experience of mobile broadband services to completely new levels.”

“Our Liquid Applications provides truly innovative, localized and personalized mobile broadband services while increasing network performance,” said Samer Qablawi, head of Zain KSA customer team, Networks, Nokia. “With this solution, Zain KSA will be able to drive location-based service innovation and introduce new services in short time frames to increase its revenue and market share, especially in 4G. The operator can create new revenue models outside the traditional telecommunications areas and reduce operating costs at the same time.”

For the successful demonstration over Zain KSA’s live network, Nokia’s Professional Services carried out the network planning and optimization, system integration, and network implementation. In the radio access, Nokia used its Radio Applications Cloud Server and award-winning Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. In addition, the company’s consolidated OSS (operations support system) based on its NetAct network management system was used for the management of Liquid Applications and the services in use.

Notes:
*Nokia’s Liquid Applications redefines the mobile broadband experience at the edge of the mobile network. Applications, services and content are brought inside a base station close to the mobile subscriber. The subscriber is, thus, exposed to real-time network data which provides a fresh and exciting experience that is personal, relevant and local.

Liquid Applications stimulates new opportunities for operators to cooperate with other entities within the connected ecosystem. Operators and third party content can be hosted locally on the base station, with level of service guarantees for priority content such as video, mission-critical data or financial transactions. Liquid Applications has the added capability to apply real-time network data to create innovative services that take advantage of local points of interest, businesses and events.

Liquid Applications is a key component of Nokia’s Liquid Broadband portfolio, which also comprises end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) Differentiation and Operator Content Delivery Network. Taken together, this offering provides key capabilities to intelligently deliver personalized services to subscribers.
