Overture Introduces 65vSE Open Platform for Virtualization at the Service Edge

Industry’s first open Carrier Ethernet platform for hosting virtual network functions (VNF) at the service edge simplifies operations, reduces inventories and unleashes new service innovation.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 11, 2014 Overture today announced it has added to its product portfolio with the introduction of the 65 Virtual Service Edge (65vSE), the industry’s first open Carrier Ethernet platform for virtualization at the service edge. The 65vSE is the newest member of the Overture 65 product family and the latest platform enabled with Overture’s Ensemble Open Service Architecture™ (OSA), the industry’s first open architecture for software-defined services at the metro service edge.

The Overture 65vSE combines Carrier Ethernet access with the benefits of virtualization, openness and software-defined services. A single platform for both services and network access, the Overture 65vSE allows for a myriad of virtual network functions to be turned up, turned down, expanded and removed dynamically so that compute and storage resources are used only when needed.  This technology opens the door for new on-demand applications that service providers (CSPs) can deploy instantly at a customer premise to simplify operations and unleash new service innovation.

“Service providers around the world see NFV as a prime new software-based method to deploy new services for revenue with a quickness and flexibility not possible with today’s hardware-based service approaches,” stated Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. “Overture has hit the mark in terms of developing a hardware product for access networks that includes an open software platform for deploying services in an NFV environment, opening the door to software applications developed by a variety of 3rd parties. Service providers will want to consider the Overture 65vSE as a way to offer a wider range of new services much faster, as the NFV approach has the potential to completely disrupt managed services as we know them.”

Overture previously introduced a centralized model for hosting virtual network functions in datacenters, points of presence, and central offices. The addition of the 65vSE at the service edge provides another choice in network architecture that may enable faster time to market for new service revenue and customer adoption.

There are times when the security, latency, or other requirements of specific functions dictate optimal placement is on the customer premise, or service edge.  The Overture 65vSE enables a hybrid NFV model whereby the virtual network functions are placed in the optimal location – the service edge, a central location, or both.

“Openness directly benefits our customers and positions them for growth and success. We have combined our Carrier Ethernet expertise with the first truly open platform for hosting best-of-breed network functions from third party developers,” said Prayson Pate, CTO and senior vice president of engineering, Overture. “The 65vSE along with the other components of Ensemble OSA and our Carrier Ethernet portfolio, together bring the speed and agility benefits of the cloud to the metro service edge.”

A carrier-grade platform based on Intel x86 micro-server technology, the 65vSE comes pre-loaded with Overture’s state of the art CE2.0 Ethernet Access Device (EAD) software and is designed to dynamically host multiple third party VNFs.  Additionally, the Overture 65vSE supports multiple wireline and wireless connections to the WAN, allowing access to all end customer locations.

Overture will be demonstrating the 65vSE in a virtual managed enterprise CPE (vE-CPE) application June 17-18 at Light Reading’s Big Telecom Event in Chicago.
