Technology, Social Media and Middle School

As the mother of a middle school daughter, I know first-hand of the mood swings, unwillingness to talk and frustration and fears that all go along with middle school. And, with technology and social media there are a whole new set of concerns facing today’s middle schoolers that we never had to deal with.

Middle school doesn’t have to be a scary time for parents and kids. In fact, it can be a time to bring you closer to your child and even learn new things about using social media so that you can be a part of their conversations.  Sprint is working with Michelle Icard and sponsoring her Right in the Middle Conference on Sunday, May 18 in Charlotte, N.C. Right in the Middle is a mother-daughter conference that will engage and educate you and your daughter as you navigate the new middle school world together.

Highlights of the conference include discussions on “The Middle School Identity,” “Media Matters,” “Friends and Frenemies,” and topics about social media (Instragram, Facebook) and wireless phones.  As a personal note, I attended the conference last year with my daughter and I definitely think about the tips and advice Michelle offered when talking to my daughter.

I will be at the conference to share tips and tools to help you manage your child’s wireless phone usage.  If you’re worried that your child isn’t going to fully grasp the responsibilities that come with owning their first mobile phone, establishing some ground rules can be really helpful. To give you a little help, Sprint put together a parent-child mobile phone “contract,” or agreement, that includes a list of rules you might want your child to follow, such as situations and times of the day when they shouldn’t use their phone, providing you, their parent, with their password, and more.

Also, I will share information about Sprint Guardian, a collection of mobile family safety and device security bundles that provide families relevant tools to help keep their smartphones – and their families – safe and secure.

  • Sprint Mobile Controls – Lock your child’s phone on demand or schedule locks during dinner, school or late at night
  • Sprint Family Locator – Quickly and easily locate your child’s phone on an interactive map
  • Sprint Drive First – Automatically lock your teenager’s mobile phone while they’re driving
  • Lookout Family – Manage your phone security by helping protect against identity theft and fraud

If you are in the Charlotte area, come join us with your daughter for a fun and informative afternoon.  Registration is now open for the Right in the Middle Conference, Sunday, May 18 from 2 – 5 p.m. in Charlotte. Hope to see you there!
