Department of Energy recognizes partners during Better Buildings Challenge two-year anniversary
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), May 27, 2014 – Sprint (NYSE:S, news, filings) was recently recognized by the Department of Energy (DOE) for its achievements in the Better Buildings Challenge. DOE Better Buildings Challenge partners are demonstrating progress toward achieving an aggregate 20 percent energy savings in 10 years, with annual energy savings of 2.5 percent or $300 million. Sprint joined the Better Buildings Challenge last year to signal commitment to improve its business operations with energy efficiency and the environment in mind.
“Sprint is unique in that it has committed to multiple DOE Showcase Projects,” said Gene Agee, Sprint vice president of Procurement and Real Estate. “While substantial work has been completed, more energy efficient projects are in development. To demonstrate Sprint’s full commitment to the program, we are implementing network, commercial and IT data center projects that reflect the unique nature of energy efficiency for each area.”
Sprint’s portfolio consists of more than 2,000 buildings and 50,000 network sites. Since 2007, Sprint has decreased total energy use by 19 percent. This achievement is a result of Sprint’s creating a cross-functional energy management team and holding business units accountable to corporate energy-reduction goals. These changes led to employee and vendor performance goals, which contributed to the energy reduction. In addition, Sprint realized energy savings by implementing more energy-efficient technologies and eliminating underused properties and redundant systems.
Sprint continues to receive recognition for its commitments to decrease energy use, enable more eco-friendly mobile solutions, and offer industry-leading wireless recycling programs. The company was recently honored as the most “eco-focused” wireless carrier by Compass Intelligence and is one of 30 companies to be named to the elite World Wildlife Fund Climate Savers program. Sprint, widely recognized for its environmental stewardship, is also the only telecom provider in the top 50 on the 2014 EPA Green Power Partners Fortune 500 list and is the only U.S. telecom company to publicly announce an absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction goal.
Last year, Sprint was the only telecommunications services company named to CDP’s S&P 500 Climate Performance Leadership Index (CPLI), which highlights companies that demonstrate strategies committed to improving their impact on the environment. Sprint was also named for the third consecutive year to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America, which tracks the corporate sustainability performance of the top 20 percent of the 600 largest companies by industry in the United States and Canada.
