[Madrid, Spain, March 17, 2014]: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced the successful completion of a joint test on Software-defined Networking (SDN)-based IP and Optical synergy with Telefonica, one of the world’s leading integrated operator in the telecommunication sector operating in 24 countries.
Based on commercially available Huawei Routers and Optical Transport Network (OTN) and Reconfigurable Optical Add-drop Multiplexer (ROADM) optical transport platforms, Telefonica and Huawei jointly completed a series of tests on SDN based IP and Optical synergy, including multi-layer restoration, multi-domain Label Switched Path (LSP) creation, online network survivability analysis, and so on. The new elastic SDN-based IP and Optical network architecture uses centralized controller, Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) User-Network Interface (UNI), IP/MPLS, PCEP (Path Computation Element Protocol) and other key technologies to realize centralized control of the multi-layer multi-domain network, achieving E2E fast service provisioning, multi-layer restoration for improved service availability and CAPEX savings, and online network surveillance for preventive maintenance.
Mr. Juan Pedro Fernandez-Palacios, Head of Core Network Evolution at Telefonica GCTO Unit, said: “Huawei is making a fantastic progress in this domain, in particular with relation to SDN, multi-layer control plane and network planning. The lab activities and extensive technical discussions we have jointly held over in past several months have proven very useful for us. We congratulate Huawei for the excellent job done and them to keep up the good progress.”
Mr. Zha Jun, President of Huawei’s Fixed Network Business Unit, said: “This project is another example of Huawei’s breakthroughs in promoting the commercial use of SDN networks. The evolution from traditional networks to SDN networks will open up network capabilities, support rapid technology innovation, improve network performance, as well as reduce operation and maintenance costs based on virtualization, automation, and intelligentization. Huawei will continue to cooperate with industry-leading operators to promote the commercial use of SDN networks.”
Huawei continues to engage in joint innovations within the SDN field with industry leading operators and is an industry leader in supporting SDN commercial deployment progress. Huawei advocates and contributes significantly to SDN technology in order to promote the technology’s standardization and commercial use. It also actively cooperates with customers, such as China Telecom and Telefonica, to further innovation in the field by building open, dynamic, and intelligent SDN networks based on automatic service deployment and network O&M simplification. Huawei actively promotes the application of SDN/NFV on operator networks and supports customers in building future-proof SDN networks, promoting the application of SDN technology in mobile backhaul networks, data centers, optical transport networks, backbone traffic scheduling, and metropolitan smart pipes.
