NSN’s evolved Smart Scheduler delivers 30 percent faster cell edge downloads #MWC14

Espoo, Finland – February 4, 2014

  • Compatible with both FDD and TDD variants of LTE
  • Boosts downlink speeds at cell edge with no added hardware costs
  • Shows world’s first demonstration of a new coordinated multi-cell scheduling approach at MWC

With a simple software upgrade, operators can deploy a coordinated scheduling feature in their FDD-LTE and TD-LTE networks to reduce interference between adjacent base stations. This evolution of the Nokia Solutions and Networks Smart Scheduler provides up to 30 percent faster downlink speeds at the cell edge, an advantage during periods of peak congestion. Importantly, coordinated scheduling is implemented as software within the base stations, avoiding the need for any additional hardware.

In LTE networks, the algorithms used for scheduling are not standardized. With NSN’s field proven Smart Scheduler, individual base station radio resources can be highly optimized, resulting in more than 100 percent increase in cell edge data rates and more than 20 percent improvement in cell capacity today when compared to other baseline industry LTE schedulers. NSN is now introducing a software upgrade that adds coordinated scheduling to the Smart Scheduler. With this function, neighboring base stations will allocate their radio resources in collaboration to reduce inter-cell interference. This leads to higher downlink speeds for subscribers, especially at the cell edge where the reduction in interference between cells produces a 30 percent improvement.

“Mobile broadband users will experience superior performance everywhere, not just when they’re at the center of a cell,” said Zhang Qi, vice president for TD-LTE at NSN. “Furthermore, NSN’s solution eliminates the need for any additional hardware. Our coordinated scheduling is a simple software upgrade in the base station because we want to keep the LTE network architecture lean and reduce unnecessary complexity.”

Offering the same benefits for both FDD-LTE and TD-LTE networks, coordinated scheduling is implemented in the existing NSN Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Stations which run the NSN Smart Scheduler. Flexi Multiradio Base Stations are currently used in hundreds of commercial radio networks around the world.

TD-LTE

NSN is the driving force behind TD-LTE innovation and commercialization, with many world firsts since 2009. These include seven recent unprecedented speed records such as 2.6 Gbps throughput using the commercial Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. NSN is unique to have TD-LTE contracts in all the six continents. NSN has 32 TD-LTE radio references, including the TD-LTE and FDD-LTE network in Australia, the largest TD-LTE network in the USA, the largest TD-LTE network in China, the first TD-LTE network in Latin America, the first TD-LTE network in Russia and the first TD-LTE network in Saudi Arabia. In fact, based on the GSA report of January 2014, NSN is supplier to approximately half of all commercial TD-LTE network launches around the world.

NSN has won multiple awards for its Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station and recently received the “Outstanding contribution to TD technology” award from Telecommunication Development Industry Alliance (TDIA). During Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, NSN received the Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI) Market Development Award, the first ever infrastructure vendor to win this category. In China, NSN won the largest market share in China Mobile’s LTE tender for non-Chinese vendors and an LTE contract with China Telecom as new supplier. NSN is also working with China Unicom on the operator’s LTE tender. NSN recently showcased a 1.3 Gbps speed record with the US operator Sprint using TD-LTE. In Europe, NSN demonstrated the world’s 1st TD-LTE Authorized Shared Access (ASA) trial that paves the way for future 5G networks.
