Huawei and Entel Group Enter Agreement to Build Nationwide Mobile Network in Peru

[Lima, Peru, February 17, 2014]: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, and Entel Group, a leading multinational operator in South America, today jointly announced that Huawei has been awarded a contract by Entel Group affiliate Nextel Perú to build a nationwide GSM/UMTS/LTE mobile broadband (MBB) network that will cover Peru. As part of the network build, Huawei will provide its innovative Active Antenna Unit (AAU) solution for highly integrated radio units and multi-band antenna products.

The Entel Group is committed to providing its subscribers with high-quality wireless communications services. Its affiliate Nextel Perú acquired a 4G spectrum license in July 2013, and Huawei was later selected to build a nationwide MBB network. The network will cover nearly all of Peru, including its capital city Lima, and aims to cover all of Nextel Perú’s subscribers. The network will also be the first large-scale commercial deployment of Huawei’s AAU solution in South America, which demonstrates its leading industry position in the region.

The contract states that Huawei will exclusively provide over ten thousands AAU sets. The AAU solution facilitates rapid site deployments, and provides site space savings of up to 75% space on rooftops, towers and poles compared to traditional solutions. Huawei AAU products also feature ultra-broadband instantaneous bandwidth (IBW), high output power, high gain and flexible configurations for multiple modes and bands. All features fulfill the Entel Group’s roadmap requirements for continuing evolution in its network operations.

During Nextel Perú’s bidding process for the nationwide MBB network project, Huawei’s leading AAU solution and its multi-band, multi-mode SingleRAN solution ranked number one in a technical tender evaluation. The AAU solution was also chosen for its capability to solve challenges related to lack of site resources and site acquisitions.

Ying Weimin, GSM/UMTS/LTE product line president for Huawei’s Wireless Networking Business Unit, said: “Huawei is committed to providing our customers with the most advanced network solutions that solve their most pressing challenges. The AAU solution is another Huawei solution that effectively reduces site complexity and enhances network capacity. It operators better respond growth in demand for capacity and solves network deployment challenges.”

To date, Huawei’s AAU solution has been utilized by more than 30 operators in pre-commercial or commercial networks in China, Europe, Canada, South America and Russia.
