Cyan, Intel, Red Hat and Connectem to Demonstrate Live End-to-End vEPC and NFV Orchestration at Mobile World Congress

February 20, 2014

Carrier-Sponsored Official ETSI POC to be Conducted in Real-world, Multi-vendor Network Environment

Cyan (NYSE: CYNI), a leading provider of software-defined networking (SDN) and network virtualization, today announced that it will present an end-to-end vEPC (virtual evolved packet core) network-functions virtualization (NFV) use case demonstration in collaboration with Intel, Red Hat and Connectem at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.

This carrier-sponsored, official ETSI proof of concept demo will show the instantiation of a virtual evolved packet core through an NFV orchestrator. Specifically, the POC will leverage Cyan’s Blue Planet SDN and NFV Orchestration Platform, which allows network providers to orchestrate multi-vendor virtual network functions (VNFs). Blue Planet’s NFV Orchestration technology simplifies the deployment and life-cycle management of VNFs.

In the POC, Blue Planet will interoperate with Connectem’s virtualized packet core technology (VCM), which is capable of addressing elasticity, scale and service velocity even in the largest mobile broadband networks. Cyan will be collaborating with Intel to highlight the DPDK accelerated vSwitch in combination with the Intel® Xeon® processor-based servers that provide compute, delivering an ideal base for NFV performance. Cyan also is collaborating with Red Hat as the solution incorporates Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform, which combines the power of Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the OpenStack cloud platform to deliver a scalable and secure cloud datacenter.

“Virtualized environments challenge every fundamental aspect of the wireless carriers’ infrastructure costs, access to capacity on-demand, and service velocity,” said Barry Hill, vice president, sales and marketing at Connectem. “With Cyan Blue Planet Orchestration, carriers can now deploy EPC infrastructure, which is normally a complex and difficult undertaking, in days instead of months. The joint solution that we will be demonstrating live at Mobile World Congress will illustrate how advanced technologies and platforms can be leveraged to re-define the economics and time-frame of service delivery for the mobile broadband market.”

Connectem has developed the first ever instance of a Virtualized LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC) with unique architectural attributes that leverages datacenter virtualization technologies to deliver unprecedented scale, availability and performance using Intel Architecture-based servers.  This allows carriers to have a cost effective solution to address the growing demand in both signaling as well as data throughput. The company’s virtualized software is capable of addressing elasticity, scale and service velocity in the largest Mobile Broadband Networks.

“This multi-vendor, multi-domain demonstration is meant to highlight the power and simplicity of NFV orchestration through Cyan’s Blue Planet,” said Michael Hatfield, president, Cyan. “In this case, Blue Planet will instantiate a vEPC from Connectem utilizing low-cost, high-performance Intel-based server technology. Blue Planet then automates the service end-to-end from the mobile-tower, across the WAN and through the vEPC.”

Built specifically for network operators and the WAN, Cyan’s Blue Planet SDN Platform lowers costs and simplifies network operations for customers, allowing them to more efficiently develop, manage, and orchestrate new services and virtualized network functions. NFV orchestration complements Cyan’s Planet Operate NMS functionality and SDN principles to introduce end-to-end orchestration capabilities, including the automation of service delivery and the optimization of network resources.
